I would love to go from karts to some form of openwheeler..maybe formula Vee of formula Ford..basic step really..but great way to learn is in these classes...Formula vee is probably the best option as it is relativley cheap compared to formula ford and are quite quick and you still get to learn all about gearing and suspension which is the next progression I believe from karting..too big a jump for me anyway to go to a winged class so i would be happy with formula Vee.

Coming from someone who races a 250 superkart why would I want to go to something that would cost considerably more to run to go slower?
That aside i wouldn't say no to a drive in a Formula Holden or a Trans Am car, although if i went back to cars it would be back to off road racing. |

You bet!
A V8 supercar around Bathurst and Phillip Island would be awesome. I wouldn't care if it was a Commodore or a Falcon. Two problems; age and money. Too much of the first and not enough of the second. I'll just have to make do with racing our Kart along with the other geriatrics in the Over 40's class. Last edited by philneast; 12 Jul 2001 at 05:46. |

i practice in Karts because its cheaper and there are a few tracks near by.
But I've also done some saloon and Formula Ford training, and would like to race either of them but probably Formula Ford. WoodyRacing |

wow...a cosworth excort ..that sure would have been a bit of a beast...shame about the hyundai thing...but then again there is your post in the F1 forum ..maybe you could pick up a driver there
well at least you can still get out and have some fun in your kart .,.many people dimiss karting but it is actually quite hard but very rewarding and quite frankly im not really sure if i want to race anything else ..I would be happy to stay in karts really ..but then again if the oppotunity came up to run a F ford or something I would be mad to turn it down..but thats a very slim possibility so karts it is for me. hope you find the booklet ..it makes things easier to identify when someone says give X part a tweak and take Y part and chuck it away or something..at least then you should be able to refer to the book and find out what the heck Y part is and why you are gonna chuck it away |

SuperKarts are quickest
As crew chief for a SuperKart team, I would say that probably 90% of the drivers are in SuperKarts for the long haul. I have met and talked to drivers from around the world in this class (250cc), many have been racing these machines for 25+ years. The existing FIA acceleration record for the standing 500 meter ands 1 km for engines to 250cc is held by a superkart:
"June 9 year 2000 have Poul V. Petersen made two new world record in a meting approved by FIA on the track Scandinavian Raceway in Sweden, in the category for motor size 0-250 cc without turbo or compressor in 500 meter and 1000 meter with standing start. The record are made in PVP kart with a Rotax 256 motor. The time for new record in 500 meter is 12,70 sec. and average speed 141,732 km pr. hour The time for new record in 1000 meter is 21,12 sec. and average speed 170,454 km. pr. hour The time between 500 and 1000 meter is 8,42 sec. and the average speed 213,78 km. pr. hour The old record in 1000 meter for 0-250cc are 143,103 km pr. hour, and the second fastest record there are registered in FIA with motors without turbo or compressor are in the category 1100-1500 cc. and the average speed for this are in 500 meter 117,801 km. pr hour, and in 1000 meter 144,746 km. pr hour. It is possible to drive in this category: 0-250 cc., 250-350cc., 350-500cc., 500-750cc., 750-1100cc., 1100-1500cc., 1500-2000cc., 2000-3000cc., 3000-5000cc., 5000-8000cc., and over 8000cc. For motor with compressor or turbo and for motor without compressor or turbo, and also for diesel with or without compressor or turbo. The fastest speed there are measured in 500 meter are in the 5000-8000cc. with compressor or turbo, and the average speed is 177,865 km pr. hour The fastest speed there are measured in 1000 meter are in the category over 8000 cc. with compressor or turbo, and the average speed is 213,898 km. pr. hour." Details of this effort can be found at PVP's home page. With a power to weight ratio of 4.8 lbs to hp, drag racing 1/4 mile times in the mid 9 second rane and 0 to 60 mph time of 3.0 seconds, most other types of motor sport pale by comparison. At the World SuperKart Challange at Laguna Seca this last May, Eddie Lawson qualified 8 seconds a lap faster than the event we were supporting (Winston West Nascar Stock cars) Also his time would have been very competitive with any of the World SuperBikes that raced at Laguna just a couple of week ago. So if you want to go really fast, spend a lot less money and already are into Karts, shoot for the bigtime in Karts, not those really slow and really expensive Formula(whatever). |

There's a lot of talk of Formula Vee, can you race them in Europe and which top drivers used to race them?

Formula Vee (1300cc) are supposed to be a good "cheaper" alternative to Formula Ford. But there are Formula Ford championships which aren't much more expensive than Formula Vee.
I dont know about other clubs, but the 750 Motor club run a Formula Vee series in the UK. heres a link with some famous racers who raced Formula Vee http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/G...4/fvracers.htm I think most new F1 wannabes would be in the more elite classes of Formula Ford. |
