Supercars “Finals Series/Playoffs/Chase” Coming Soon?

V8Sleuth and Auto Action having been pushing this hard in recent times, both in their own ways.

Some of V8Sleuth’s terminology and reporting on it has been very direct as if it has been decided and people have to get used to it….

Have Supercars informed these two outlets that it will be introduced in 2025 and its their job to try and “sell” the idea to the fanbase before it gets formally announced?

Bloody well hope not!
The scope to improve the current show by going back to past formats, or building new ones has not even begun to be explored

The AA mob also think they should have stages every 250km or so at the Bathurst 1000... short of the year they fixed the road... the benefits are immeasurable.

The series has a single tyre next year. Surely there is someone up in the ivory tower who can assess every event, every race, every everything and model what it looks like to operate a variety of strategies and then see what happens in those races

The commentary team already know about undercuts and overcuts and tyre degradation and can predict the winner before the race has even turned a wheel. Except when they lose track of the players and a win like Mr Percat's at the weekend shows up.

With time & energy, they could figure that out.. to maximise the potential spectacle without the artificiality of stages and stages points..

They should keep asking questions, good questions...

Like why does a 500km weekend need to be 2x250km races, which will see the field learn what goes on in Saturday's 250km race, and everyone replicates it for Sunday so its boring. Why not races of unequal length? A 200km and a 300km? Or 3 races of unequal length. Mix up the formats

Migrate the practice time into race laps. Do the same for in-season testing. And perhaps even ride days and the like. That could be on Friday to give the punters something to look at as the ride winners get to lap the track, doing something that was going to happen anyway. I am always perplexed as to why the current pilots call for more seat time, yet for the most part absolutely hate ride days.

Perhaps that makes for mandatory laps for codrivers, so the mad scramble into other categories (syphoning the sponsorship pool) to keep the laps up.

Or not.

Nobody listens to the punters who pay to go or watch anyway

I hope not too. Would be a triumph of style over substance if they went that way. There are not enough rounds in the year to have a meaningful "finals/payoff/chase" - it is still controversial and generally not liked by fans in NASCAR and they have way more regular races than Supercars.

GTR is right, IF they feel the need to muck around with formats, there's much that could be done before considering finals of some kind. As an example, if you look back at the "Golden era" of the noughties, there were varieties in format during a season and from year to year. Whilst not perfect, a bit of actual imagination can go a long way.

Sound’s like some guru/genius has had a brain fart.

Why not run Bathurst in reverse this year?

Why not run an event on dirt at Sydney Speedway or team up with the good folk at Warrnambool for mega event with the sprintcar classic?

Season finale could be a demo derby?
