Nashville Thread
Practice is underway this morning...
Since they are racing at night, qualifying in the heat of the day, and doing their first shakedowns this morning, teams probably won't learn much until their full-tank sessions this evening.... But early results show Vitor meira with the top time of 199.881 Mark Taylor is the slowest thus far at 192.975 Only 11 of the cars have even taken the track in this session and it is about 30 minutes old... Penske hasn't taken to the track yet...nor has Kanaan, Dixon, Scheckter, Fernandez, or Rice Top Five in this session thus far: 1. Meira 199.881 2. Manning 198.897 3. Wheldon 197.214 4. Matsuura 196.896 5. Giaffone 196.660 Four of the next five are all over 196: Herta Franchitti J. Lazier Takagi Bell is in the 195 range Live Timing & Scoring is on the IRL site... |

Giaffone now topped 198, and Takagi is fourth in the high 197s
Everyone has been on the track now and the drivers mentioned earlier as not being outthere are now getting up to speed |

With less than 10 minutes left in the session:
1. Meira 2. Scott Dixon 3. Rice 4. Manning 5. Kanaan 6. Giaffone the Penske cars are 15th (hornish) and 17th... Cheever team near the bottom...AJ IV is slowest of the session... Speeds range from 199 to 194.... |

That's the way the session ended...
The top 15 are all over 196 mph. and aw within about 4 tenths of a second of each other.... Like I said earlier, this session is like night & day from what the race will be (no pun intended), but the 2nd session should tell us a little about how qualifying will go... Ganassi finally stepped up.... |

Nice to see Giaffone have a good session. He's overdue, and he's a better driver than his car has let him show.
Also good for Takagi, who has looked miserable and downright scared to be in an IRL car since Motegi. Maybe this will give him some confidence again. Good show for Dixon, and Manning. Could this be their breakout race? The times seem to be almost as quick as last year though. I wonder if the teams are finding new ways to get some speed out of these new 3.0 engines? |

The 2nd session saw some teams gain and others stay the same....
Let's see how hot the track is for qualifying..... |

in actual fact i just did a quick calculation and this is the 94th Indy Racing League event since its inception , so Scott has only missed 4 races since 1996 , now that is impressive

Man, there isn't a tighter, closer, more competitive series out there. Look at how close those times are, incredible!
Rahal/Letterman, and AGR are really the teams to beat now, there's no doubt left. But the Ganassi boys look like there ready this time, can they upset them? Should be a great one! I hope TagHeuer is ready! |

You want to watch the pit stops. That's where Rahal teams shine. Miera lost some time last race when he killed his engine and lost the lead. The pit crews are extremely good.
Most of the guys in Rice's crew are from the Craftsman pit crew challenge winners in the Cart series. Miera's crew is mostly new, but the crew chief was the leader of the challenge winners and is working hard to hone the edge. They will win one soon. |

The right front changer signaled Vitor to take off before the hose was disconnected on the "killer" stop, which casued him to kill the engine... Then he raced hard to return to the top five, only to have another slow stop on the last yellow that moved him back to ninth.... Vitor had the best car on the track ....but has nothing to show for it... I hope that this crew will be practicing stops all week long.... Vitor deserves a win....and his crew let him down at Nashville.... Last edited by Tim Northcutt; 19 Jul 2004 at 13:49. |

I agree Tim. I saw some photos of the race and the main grand stand, which is huge, looked very full.
