Jim Crawford 1948-2002

Autosport are reporting Jim Crawfords passed away at the terribly young age of 54. A super Indycar racer who should have had a far longer F1 career, probably best remembered for his Aurora AFX f2 performances in the lates 70's. Condolences to his family and friends. I really admired him for tameing the big buick engined cars at Indy.

I remember him from his eight Indianapolis starts. May God bless.

He turned a practice lap at Indy back in 1992 at 233.433, which at that time was the quickest ever. In 1989, Crawford set the track's one- and four-lap qualifying records for turbocharged stock-block engines at 222.069 and 221.450.

Liver failure.

This is very sad news. Jim was so quick in Formula Atlantic in the mid 70s. He was noticed by Colin Chapman as a result who put him in one of his cars for the 75 British GP. As posted above his natural speed was never in doubt when he moved across the pond.
A great loss.

I only met him once, in 1989, when he was driving for Menard.

We had put together a sponsorship with AC Delco for the team and John introduced me to him to him in the garage at Indy. What a nice man, unlike some of them.

He really mastered Indy -even though he never won it.

I was shocked to hear this news. May he rest in peace.
