Mini's - Where've they all gone?
Where have all the mini's gone?
I did a meeting recently where only five "Super Mighty Mini's" turned up and yesterday at Mallory there were only four Extreme Mini's (Whatever that's supposed to mean) Do we have too many mini series' (Miglia's, 7's Mighty, Super Mighty, Extreme? |

When Mighty Minis started there were dozens of them, but they have been diluted by too many championships. I would love to see a grid full of Extreme minis though especially at Mallory.

I think you both have your Minis confused!
Currently, there are 3 'series'. 1) Mightys and Super Mightys - Last run at Brands yesterday. Generally capacity grids for the Mightys, and around 13-14 Supers these days. 2) Mini Se7ens + Miglias - last run at Snetterton over the weekend. I think they still get pretty good grids of 20+ but I don't know the exact figures. Perhaps Snapper Baz can tell us. 3) Extreme Mighty Minis - this is a brand new series devised by Rodger Tello of Mighty/SuperMighty fame. The idea is that almost any "Mini derivative" car can come out and play. That includes the BMW thing. The Extremes have just started, so the grids will be poor for a while, but remember that just 3 Mighty Minis lined up on the start grid at Cadwell Park in 1996, and look how far that's come. |

Not quite accurate Piglet, they had separate races at both tracks. I think each class had bigger entries at Donington that Snetterton (though I'm not about to get my programmes out to prove it!). Generally there's around 20 Miglias and 28 Se7ens these days.

I was confused because I'd been involved in a conversation with one of the mini drivers at Donington who was concerned that they might be exceeding the track limit and that there would have to be reserves. IIRC the capacity was around 30/32 and there were I think 29 car registered for whichever race it was - not a bad grid really! Last edited by Piglet; 29 Apr 2003 at 14:51. |

I wouldn't describe myself as a mini fan but there is something oh so amusing about watching them overtake cossies by driving around them on the outside of a corner. (SEMSEC mixes 'em all up)

I've got to say that IMHO from the outside Mini's (along with Caterhams and Legends) provide some of the most entertaining racing we see. Never mind this "one racing line" stuff - seeing mini's four or five wide through a corner is spectacular, although sometimes a bit bum-clenching from a marshalling point of view...

I think there are too many Mini championships but lets be fair, they do provide (depending on the championship) a variety of categories. Slick or treads, modified or standard etc. But they are just as expensive to make work in their class as a big banger so I see very little advantage in them.

Have to admit to being a fan of mini racing. Some of the best races I have ever watched have been se7ens and miglias (not forgetting Caterhams of course).

Any category that has grids of 20 plus cars has a right to be there. Verbal brickbats should be saved for the half hearted entries which take up valuable space in the calendar.
P.S, haven't seen a Mini race in years, I take your word for it that they still get good entries. |

they were very good - but could have done with bursting full grids... |

Mini's are totally awesome. What exactly don't you like about them?
If you love close racing, full grids, friendly competitors (on the whole), and a heck of a lot of overtaking then mini racing is what you should be looking at!!! |

Agreed. How many are out at Brands for the CSMA meeting in two weeks, anyone know?
