But still, the thought of another Murray-penned creation, just maybe at Le Mans - mouthwatering, isn't it?

Interesting... I've been hearing rumblings about a McLaren aerodynamicist working on a P2 project.

According to the article it's a "sports car prototype" which will be "at the disposal of the big constructors that want to race at Le Mans".

Murray's split with Mercedes was not the best.
Murray seemed to be disappointed in interview's about the constraints put on him during the SLR project, which really hampered the end project. He is however, always proud of the SLR for what was achieved with the changing brief he had. He had a good time with BMW, Paul Rosche particularly, as they really came to the party giving a much better engine than he expected for the McLaren F1. Also BMW gave assistance with the development of the 1997 long-tail McLaren, which needed a slightly different engine, and supported the Le Mans project in general. In, "Driving Ambition" by Doug Nye, Murray clearly felt that what McLaren had achieved with the plan to build the ultimate road car, was fantastic. Had the brief been to build the ultimate race car from the outset, the result would have been much different, the car lighter, stiffer for example. He clearly relished the idea of having a go at building a race car from scratch. It would be ironic though, if his rumoured LMP race car could not win Le Mans in its first year, as his road car had done. |
