Head Praises Montoya
Patrick Head, who had reputed by his straight criticism to drivers, praises Montoya. He believes his driver does have the skills to overhaul Schumacher, and dethrone the reigning World Champion.
"Juan always seems to find that gap at the crucial moment to push his way through the field, whether it's Michael, Kimi Raikkonen or any other driver on the grid. He makes it look easier than it is and that is a great skill," Head told People, and re-reported by F1live. http://f1.racing-live.com/en/index.html |

Re: Head Praises Montoya
Well, Montoya become Williams's Golden Boy again? Or, it's just the way from Williams/Head to support his drivers ini crucial moment to win the championship and give them WCC/WDC trohpy?

It's the right time to put some confidence in his driver fighting for the title.

For Patrick Head to back a driver so unequivocably is unusual - it's not really his (or Frank's) style. Either he's mellowing in old age - he wasn't as critical of Ralf's early-season form as many - or he's genuinely that impressed with JPM.
It could be that he's the Golden Boy again as the Zepster suggests, of course we dont' know the full story of Ralf's withdrawal from Monza or the basis behind his other recent 'errors'. It'd be interesting to see who gets the msot support in 2004 - building this year's car more around Montoya's driving style and influence was a significant decision |

I completely agree with Sato. I'll take it further, if you can't appreciate JPM's driving you don't know what your suppose to be looking for.

Both Frank and Patrick also defends JPM decision to back off in Monza after his two episodes with the Sauber & Jordan and he was already 5-6 seconds behind Michael.
Compare with their critics for Ralf in Canada. |

head praises Montoya- and why shouldn't he?
JPM is a great racer, and F1 material and style, he'll get a WDC and he'll be legendary its only a matter of time- now will he be like Senna? or Schumi? or Stewart or... well his name doesn't start with an 's' but you get it... |

I was watching the race in Monza, GP Italia 2003, two weeks ago. Which race you were watching?
Maybe Frentzen or Baumgartner didnt destroy Monty's chances, maybe his car didn't have pace to win, or maybe... But its not my point, and its has been discuss before. My point was both Frank and Patrick defends JPM's decision to back off. |

Look at Monaco, the most demanding race of all, was JPM knackard when he got out of the car there? then compare that with Mansell in 1992. |

Montoya did a lot of work on his fitness when he first came to F1, and it has certainly done him proud, as Monaco demonstrated (although, in fairness, Mansell's 1992 race was much tougher, physically and mentally, and he didn't have the comfort of having won)

It would be cool if JPM wins the WDC while Michael is still in F1 - that way he can say he beat the best, instead of the best of the rest.

I like that sentiment JohnSSC, Monty is a bit special... with any luck he will be retained by Williams, and it will be Schumi Lite to go to McLaren

Problem is, JPM can't even get into the position to do it thus far. It's always nice to beat the best driver. But question is, even if he beat Michael, is he better than Michael when we look back at history? Unlikely. Mika and JV and Hill had won WDCs competing Michael, but none of the 3 were remembered as being better than Michael. |

Well, no matter what JPM does or does not acheive, theres no way he'll be remembered as being as controversial

Did i hear someone say JPM fat? Wow, it really brings us back to the days when JPM first step into F1. Thing is, thankfully JPM's the type who is naturally fit, hence even if he doesn't train as much as some guys, he could actually have the physical ability to race the car.
One thing that i see changing in JPM, which Frank also had mentioned recently, is how JPM had matured since he first came F1. Strange thing for a seasoned racer who done a few years in US, but he has changed. Look at his recent decisions to back off during the race knowing he can't pass Michael, to lift off in qualifying knowing that he had already secured a position in front of Michael, to be more careful and measured in his approach to overtaking and driving. This coupled with his natural abilities does make for a very strong potential which even his critics can't deny. Certainly, he hasn't been a all rounded driver as good as Michael. But JPM had certainly shown he's far better than JV, and JV's won a WDC hasn't he? JPM's been one of the closest any recent driver had got to Michael. And Frank and Head's recent praises are needed to extra motivate their remaining hope in the title challenge. BMW needs this championship rather desperately afterall. And who knows, they are healing a wound hoping Montoya will stay on next year? |
