Historic events in Italy - June
I have the good fortune to have a few weeks off between jobs, and have convinced the Good Lady that I can take off in the motorhome with the TR5 on the trailer for a couple of weeks or so in June. I'm looking to enter the Mugello Road Race, and will try to get an entry into Vernasca Silver Flag (although I realise that my car might not be interesting enough for them), but there is a weekend in between those two events, when I could do something else. I've been surfing around, but I get the feeling that the Italian scene is somewhat disjointed, with lots of regional or 'one-event' clubs - does anyone know if where I could find a comprehensive list of everything that might be on? Or does anyone know of an interesting historic event on the weekend of 19th-20th June, somewhere in Northern Italy, could be circuit race, or road based (although I might not have a navigator - but as the wife was pregnant when we did the Targa Florio I've learnt how to drive and do the roadbook if absolutely necessary!!!)
Suggestions very welcome. Also any suggestions as to how I might improve my chances of getting into Silver Flag? Short of investing in some rare Italian machine! Does anyone know anyone that I might contact? James |

Hi James,
I guess it's a bit early for you, as of course there's the Coppa Intereuropa at Monza on the 5-7th June. For a really good listing, it's worth trying to get hold of a copy of Ruoteclassiche magazine, which usually has a full event listing. HTH (a bit) James Quote:

Another one I forgot about is the Mugello Stradale.
Supposedly a fun event, with both 'race' and regularity options. http://tinyurl.com/czoebu James |

Thanks James, Mugello Stradale is the first of the events I'm planning to do, albeit I miss the Castle Combe round of the HSCC HRS to do so, but this is a one-off opportunity for me. Sadly I can't get out to Monza in time, that's why I'm looking for an event on weekend of 20th.
Just hope I can get into Silver Flag too. You planning to do HSCC Silverstone International in May?? James |

The TR5 is actually a pretty rare car over here, so presumably rarer still in Italy. Not enough made but I always though the best of the bunch, as it had that very distinctive TR4 shape coupled to that lovely old straight six engine.

You could send in any case the entry form asking to participate with your TR5 eventually as "apriprista" at the beginning of each climb! I will be there, as every year, with my Merlyn MK20 FF. Carlo |

Make sure you have/take with you an HTP for the car.Italy tends to be keen on this sort of thing.

No because the CSAI,like some other ASN, choose, and it is a choice, to adopt the whole of the International sporting code for its motor sport. Thus Appendix K is the only permitted historic motor sport in Italy. That means the cars have to have HTP to demonstrate compliance .

I actually gave up with my italian plan, largely because I could elicit no response from several emails to both events, nor did I manage to raise anyone on the phone! I used to do a lot of business with Italians so I wasn't entirely surprised. When we did the Giro di Sicilia a few years back I took Trisha Pilkington's advice and actually went to Retromobile in Paris to meet the organisers and ensure that we got the entry sorted! It was the only way to get confirmation prior to having to commit to car transport and get reasonably priced plane tickets!
I guess to be sure of getting into these events I need either a) a representative in Italy b) a car that was formerly raced by Scuderia Someeting ... Anyway, without my plans actually being set in concrete my Good Lady spotted an opportunity to put a spanner into them, by suggesting that I should attend 'Sports Day' at my daughter's Nursery (she's 2, I'm not sure quite what Sports Day will entail, but I'm told that current rules forbid me to take a camera...), I can also take part in the village 'Scarecrow' Day - who'd want to doing a special stage on the Raticosa when faced with Scarecrow day as an option ... I can also do HSCC Castle Combe though. So ... I'm now doing a much abbreviated 5 day outing to race with ASAVE at GPAO Dijon (and have 'negotiated' at home to do Charade with the same crowd in September if Dijon is fun.) I've also started saving for a more eligible car, that's as long as Emily doesn't want a pony first ... James |

I believe that there are far more call outs for Air Ambulances related to Horse riders, competitive or otherwise, as a percentage of possible users than any other source. Surely your wife would not want to risk her daughter to something with four legs and a mind of its own. Would she? I suppose you could compromise and buy a prancing horse? Overalls not jodhpurs don'tcha know ... bring them to their senses man! |
