1987 World Touring Car Championship
Has anyone ever worked out the pointscore for the drivers' championship that disregards the requirement to be a registered entrant to score points?

Very interesting hypothesis. I’m sure there’s someone out there with enough time on their hands and plenty of dedication to have done it.

I looked at this a while ago. I don't have the spreadsheet anymore, but from what I remember the standings didn't turn out much differently at the top. Only 7 or 8 cars entered every race, after all.

Apart from the 2 wins for the #48 CiBiEmme car at Spa and Silverstone, and the Marko Merc 190 inheriting the win at Monza, Class B pretty much always went the way of a registered car. None of these appeared regularly enough- or at least finished at the top of the results enough- to really change the outcomes at the top of the championship Mid-table would have probably looked a bit different though, with Moffatt & Harvey picking up a couple of strong points scores (the Monza win and 4th o/a + 1st in the 'big' class at Spa), and the Fury/Seton Nissan would have scored respectably, finishing well up overall and on the class podium in all three of it's appearances. Brock's Bathurst win wouldn't have made much difference to his theoretical championship position, as IIRC it wouldn't have counted for points- he'd started the race in 05 and swapped to #10, and I think the convention at the time was that drivers who were cross-entered/swapped cars could only score points if they hadn't driven their original nominated car in the race before they switched Last edited by KA; 31 Jan 2019 at 07:51. |
