I wonder if he'll have the nerve to show up and collect his prize?

Well, if this award is on ability alone then yeah, fine. He has made the rest of the field look silly for much of the year (calander, Austria excepted).
However, surely sportsperson should encompass everything a sports person "should be"? And I'm not talking about "being a nice bloke" here (by all accounts Steven Redgrave's a right old sod!) |

I could argue that MSch only looks good because Toad and Brawn buggered up Rubens car during the years he has been with Ferrari. This conspiracy theory will continue to haunt Ferrari for a long while after this race.

I'll agree with Tristan. If it's based on his superb driving skill and dominance, then fine, give it to him.
But if it's based on certain other aspects, then no, it's not deserved. |

Obviously they have changed the definition of "sportsman" recently.
To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the death of Gilles Villeneuve -- who died as a direct result of being cheated out of a race win by a teammate with the connivance of Ferrari -- by giving a Sportsman of the Year award to a man who did the same thing, absolutely boggles the mind. |

I think the award relates to last year.
He did not turn up which shows how bad the situation is at. What a conveniant time to give him this award. How embarising to him, the award and sword in general. You have got th laugh |

Hats off to his Highness, the King of Formula one for accepting the award. I must say I have never seen such a dominant driver in formula one history.. his teammates cant dare win against him, FIA is scared of him, Ferrari loves him... its only the poor fans... ahh.

This is interesting -
I wonder who was told to back-off, move over so Michael could collect this so called sportsman of the year award. |

Montoya was voted "World Newcomer of the Year, ahead of injured England footballer Steven Gerrard and Belgian tennis star Justine Henin", according to that link. While on one hand that's a fine acknowledgement of Montoya's superb debut season in Formula One, on the other, the decision is a bit strange, considering JPM has won both the CART championship as well as the Indy 500 previosly - he's no newcomer in that respect. Since the award is not a Formula One award, but an award for sporting achievements in general, I find this decision a little peculiar, but by all means, it's a great way of acknowledging JPM's great career so far. |

I agree fully with your commnets about JPM.
The Williams is a little off the pace at some circuits, but he is the driver to watch. As far as the award for last years achievements for MS, he was probably helped with obtaining it as well. |

Hmmm..heard about this, very very iffy...sportsman doesn't mean best, it means best and fairest...I cant agree with this award, no way.

Tiger Woods - honest, humble, respects the history of his chosen sport and is a thoroughly good bloke
TGF - arrogant, cheater, has no respect for Fangio, Stewart et al and is basically a t--t. Any idea who judged these awards - it wasn't a bunch of chimps by any chance? Last edited by laudaman; 15 May 2002 at 08:51. |

An award like that should go to a role model.

Presumably it was not an award for Sportsmanship.

How do you explain to a child why they gave a "sportsman" award to a man like that? "Oh, it's a prize he gets because he makes the most money" is my thought...... or perhaps "he's the only name the people who got the ballot recognized." Hey, it worked for Mikey Andretti!
As for JPM, I think Europeans discount anything that anyone did outside Europe. |
