Old rallycross cars

This should prove slightly debatable but does anyone the final whereabouts of all the old famous rallycross cars.

Here is a few for starters -

Roger Newbould's Renault - at the bottom of his garden
John Welch Xtrac Astra - Tommy Kristoffersons workshop
Matti Alamakis Lancia Delta S4 - In Italy still with Jarmo Lahnteenmaki
Terje Schie's Peugot 205 T16 - he bought it back a couple of years ago
Mark Rennisons RS200 - In an american museum

Anyone know of any others??

Trevor Hopkins RS200 is still with his family. Rennisons car was up for sale - there are details on www.rs200.org

I can't remember where the John Welch Astra is - wait for Allen Mead to log in, he'll know as he's spoken to John about it fairly recently.

The last time I spoke to John Welch about the astra, he said that it had been sold and stripped, which is a sad day indeed.

I was stood next to him in the assembly area at Croft for the Formula Renault race at the touring car meeting last weekend but didnt get chance to speak to him.

I know he sold it to Tommy Kristofferson because Tommy needed the transmission for the Audi for the beginning of the season.

Didn't John Welch have 2 Vauxhalls (Opel), Kadette and Astra, sure he did. Most old rallycross cars end up at John Cross's workshop, stripped and used as parts for the Autocross guys.

THe funny thing is, if Newbould bought out that Renault again now it would probably win.
Did I read on here somewhere that one of the Rowlance guys had quite a few old rallycross Metro's
And I bet Gibbo still has his car somewhere.
What happened to Dimi's S1 Quattro?
Gary Bakers RS200?
I bet Schanche has a ton of stuff at his place, now there is a yard and workshop I would love to wander round!
I'll bet the Iversens have a load of stuff aswell!!

I had the privelege of sleeping in the back of schanche's bus in poland about 3 years ago and he was saying he had just sold the last of the RS200's a few earlier weeks earlier to (I think) a bloke in Norway. As far as the remainder of the stuff he sold all the decent bits when he sold out to Kuypers and Hundsbet with the escorts and latterly Glen Voie when he sold the astra. The only thing which we dont hear of is the shell which was very nealry finished which wwas being built as a spare car. I understand Glen Voie got everything so maybe Sachweh has it now.
Interestingly he never had any sentimentality for any of the cars they were always just a tool to do his job.

winnie has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
Welch did have two of the Astra's, one was a show car. Interestingly, last year at the Vauxhall stand at the Goodwood festival there were at least, maybee three Astra 4x4 rally cars, one in particular was really high, looked like maybee a Paris / Dakar job! I don't know much about the Astra 4x4 or how many were built.

Didn't Gary Baker smash his Joe Bloggs RS200 to bits at Brands GP one year.

Rob Gibson still has his car, it has been out a few times over the last couple of years. Still one of the quickest cars around with Rob driving it. Must be the roughest 6R4 i've ever seen. Its held together with tank tape and cable ties!

Newbolds Renault was the business. Double wishbone, F3 hubs, Hewland box, screaming BDA (later 2.4 YB). Agree it would beat all the current modified apart from maybee the Micra.

Winnie, GM designed and built two specs of the Astra 4wd car.
One was built over here for Andrew Wood to drive and was a supercharged car with a sort of mid engined spec, the engine being right up against the bulkhead.
Not sure what motor it was based on but he rallied it a couple of times and was quick in it against Metros and stuff. That car looked most like John's two machines, especially the first one.
But mechanically Johnsd was more based on the Dakar car in Bastos livery that was used. That had the same Manta 400 engine. But John's used the now famous Xtrac gear and tranny with variable split that even the rally boys didnt have in those days and was eventually put on the Celica GT4 rally car built by TTE.

Upside Down Bug should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I seem to recall hearing last year that Gary Baker's RS200 is pretty much in one piece and he still owns it.

I have to say that I would like to find out the whereabouts Dimi's Audis. It was those cars that rekindled my love of Rallycross in the mid 80s. Many a happy day sitting on the roof of my camper watching it being pushed onto the grid by a massive group of helpers and then going on to blitz the field. Ooops put the rose tinted specs away!

The other cars that would be interesting to find are the Beetles (4wd and 2wd). The last of the breed, Pete Harrold's is still around, and I understand John Atkinhead still had his. But what happened to Willy Vevers'? And there was a lad who brought out a yellow one in the late eighties for a few rounds and then disappeared, I think his name was Cadwallader (or something similar).

Must go for a lie down.

I though that Gary may still have his car.
How can you have a thing like that sat there and do nothing with it. He was pretty quick in it towards the end of his career.
Dimi's cars I think were sold, he tended to sell most of his stuff when he got fed up with it.
Think the Quattro went to Adolf Heinz in Germany, but no idea where the S1 went. I know he spent a silly amount of money on it. DIdnt he put a stonking engine in ot from Lehmanns or something!
No idea about Beetles, maybe James Harrold could help.
I do rememebr vevers and Nielsens cars though, but my faves were the Turbo ones from guys like Nordstrom, I remember him storming through the field at that soaking wet GP meeting in about 86

James has Peters Beetle .I had a good look last time I was up that way .
It was pritty basic and once i sat in the seat I wondered how the driver could see
through such a small windscreen.

The Welch cars:
The first one was an ex Paris-Dakar car and the 2nd was a brand new car I was told built from scratch with the same panels on it as the first one.
The car was sold to a guy who put all the bits in his BMW but not sure what happened to the shell.

Ian Rowlance still has quite a few Metros "Lying around".
Roger Newbould once said he would of liked to make the Renault a Road car.

Yep, we have the Beetle at ours now. Have tested it on a runway near home a couple of times. All still runs ok, bags and bags of power, but with it, bags and bags of lag. Think 500+bhp through rear wheels would be interesting, if not a bit scary. The person that new the most about the car has sadly passed on, so its all a bit new to me. We vowed we would use it in anger once more but are bit frightened of wrecking the engine (not many like that around!!!!)
Willy`s is still all in bits on the bench, after his roll at Lydden a while ago. Cant really see it being put back together, although would love to see it out again - Very quick NA beetle.
Will keep you informed of any plans in terms of racing the beetle, need to do something soon or may forget how to drive.

ppj, hey there, great to hear you still have the car and it is a state of running!
Was never sure what Pete used to run in the thing, always great off the linbe and then a beast thereafter!
Presume he was using a bored out flat four or something, and I alwasy thought the car was 4wd!
Think someone needs to organise some sort of demo of the old cars, would be rgeat to see and hear a few of them again

Whilst talking about old Modified cars, the team have acquired the ex-Tony Bell/Andrew Scott Toyota MR2.

We hope to test the car before the end of the year and might even enter it in a Rallycross meeting. I'm interested in hearing from anyone who might know some of the history/spec of the car.

Think it was Tony's first venture into rallycross in the early ninties or may even have been late eighties.~
Seem to remember it was quite competitive but then it is a nicely balanced and lightweight machine
He ran in the old Formula B but am not sure if he kept the 1600 engine initially and then moved to a 2.0. Think both were 16v, meaning he would have had to run in B
Car used to red and white if that helps! Sure there might be someone with a pic somewhere

Chunder....
Yea, off the line it was electric - corners were a bit of a handful due to the laws of physics taking thier toll! It was 4wd for a few years and was at one time quite successful, the last few years of its competitive life it was changed back to 2wd. It was a 2.1 flat 4 with 16v subaru heads grafted to it and Garrett T3 Turbo charger @ 2 bar pressure. Shame the car was never really developed in other areas. Hewland Dog box was strong but getting gears was sometime a bit of a lottery.
May get it out sometime, think Blyton would really suit the car.

As for gears I am presuming Pete was using a Hewland racing box a la Formula Ford or summat.
Only thing I can suggest is some of the grasstrack guys as they all used to use Hewlands (well the top guys anyway) until they all started going transverse!
Car sounds superb, would be really cool to see it out and yes I think it would be rather quick at Blyton, but as you say that long right at the end of the back straight might be a bit of a hero tester! Would be great to watch though. Is the old thing still blue and white?
Imagine Wildtracks in it, you would need a one of those tiller things on the wheel like fork lifts have!!
