As Tony Cochrane quoted on V8 Superstars "the facilities are virtually non-existent with only there been a concrete slab where the corporate area use to be and the track needs a major upgrades." However he did say that if the Tasmanian gov was to upgrade Symmons Plains then he would like to see the V8's back their.
On that note you won't ever see the V8 Supercars there again. Last edited by HRT; 21 Apr 2004 at 08:09. |

wasn't built because the supercars left so no need for one. can understand why the circuit wasn't upgraded with no v8's coming down. |

Procar has been going to Tassie ever since 2002, and Toca went there in December 2000

GruoupA baskerville is used more just because the managers of both tracks are based in Hobart and cant concentrate long enough to drive two hours to Symmons Plains.I asked this once before but how many other tracks in Australia have reverse angle parking on the pit apron to get probably twenty cars.I have been to club days were witches hats had to be put on the left hand side of the track going up the hill beacuse of an under ground spring leaking through the surface. The track is fun but it is a goat track. The fact that anyone could think about spending money there is a joke,as bad as Symmons Plains is it you would have to spend at least two million dollars at Baskerville to get it to Symmons standard.

You have no chance of TC donating funds to upgrades he won't even dip into his own pocket for Bathurst and it was at his insistance that the pits and corporate areas are being upgraded.
What chance do you poor buggers down in Tassie have? The Grumpy1 P.S. NONE |

We were hoping that our dear old football loving Goverment might tighten up the AFL purse strings and give motor racing some funds. They spend 1 million dollars a year now that york park is under covered and upgraded just to keep the games coming .I have heard rumours of a meeting this week between one TC and one Premier.

Maybe we could offer TC a sweetner ,maybe a house and land option at the up and coming suburb of Rossarden to bring his show here.

Jason7250 I think you had better get your facts right
The current Managers of the circuts(Owners of Baskerville and the lease on Symmons- Motorsports Tas) dont run any of the race meetings, The previous owners (Hobart Sporting Car Club) run 2 meetings a year and because there original base is Baskerville why wouldn't they run the meetings there. The other 4 meetings this year are run by a group which uses Octagon as its base. There are 6 other Club days running at Symmons this year 4 by the Light Car Club (Northern based) 1 by North West Car Club and 1 by the MG car club(state wide club) There are only 4 club days at Baskerville, MG running 2 ,Hobart sporting car club 1 and Mini car club 1. And dont forget that Pro car are at Symmons September 18/19 Pretty even on the events stakes. Now lets get to the track condition, Symmons is in need of a bit of re sealing (the back straight is very bumpey)Most of the Saftey issues that they all seem to talk about dont seem to exisist and were fixed the last time the V8's ran there, And why would Motorsports Tas spend heaps of money when in 2008 the Lease expires ! They went to Canberra from Symmons and worked out of tents and in a cramped area, all amenitties were tempory so what if they come back to Symmmons, The Media room that Cochrane talked about dosn't matter any more as the can bring the Big Pond B Double over. I believe the deal is Avesco want $95,ooo and free transport over on the boat, The Tassie Govt have already been burnt by the previous owners of Symmons when the Pits were moved to the outside of the circuit. Thats one reason they are a bit shy to spend. Having raced on both circuits Baskerville is a far better track than Symmons. Baskerville is the real drivers track were Symmons is 2 drag strips connected with a couple of corners. |

"The Tassie Govt have already been burnt by the previous owners of Symmons when the Pits were moved to the outside of the circuit. Thats one reason they are a bit shy to spend." 1.Who were the previous owners before the Youl family? 2.Did you mean previous lease holder and if so was it not the lease holder before the last? 3.By how much did the Goverment get burnt? 4.Wernt some funds given back to the Goverment when the previous lease holder took over? 5.If the lease holder is not responsible for spending money on their investment who is? 6.What point during a lease do you stop spending money? 7.Does this mean that the current lease holder is not going to renew their lease? 8.Are they going to let the track run down into further disrepair? |

Sounds like you dont know much about the history of Symmons, The Youl Family Built the circuit on property they owned, The circuit was run by Tasmanian Motor Racing Company( John youl was a director of the company) and it was that company which couldn't repay the Goverment loan. The Goverment not only lent money to the company for alterrations but gave them a non repable grant. The amount needed for the repayment was $30,000 dollars or there abouts. The Govt stepped in and the Hobart sporting car club was given a lease on the circuit which is paid to John Youl and one of his sons as the property the track sits on had been split up.( at one stage there was a barbed wire fence erected across the track about 500mt out from the hairpin).. After running the track for a couple or may be 3 years and getting them selves into further debt(owing about $80,000 dollars after making alterations to Symmons) and not making enough out of the V8 supercar meetings they sold Baskerville and the Lease to Motosports Tas who now have control. Do the lease holders go into massive debt when they can't secure an extended lease on the circuit. The track had never had much spent on it under the TMRC it was always behind the 8 ball compared with mainland circuits. The back striaght I believe could still have some of the origanal suface which was laid in the 60's. foundations for the track were never realy built properly and some heavy earth works realy need to be carried out Symmons has been caught out in much the same way that alot of other circuits have that they have never been upgraded enough in the early days and the V8 Supercars have out grown them to quick. |

I think it is so sad that Procar have gone the way they have, but I'm sure by the end of this week you will see some really positive outcomes from this.
The current categories will survive & I really hope that there is still a round in TAS. I know our category would love to go too TAS for a round of our series, but at this point we will just have to wait and see. |

Atleast it'll give a chance for Taswegians to expereince again a series that one of their sons won last year! I spose it would be good for Marcos Ambrose to have a home coming!
