The Journal de Montreal today made a big annoucement on Molson leaving the race as the Prime sponsor. What is key in the acticle is that both Normand Legault and Champ Car knew about this for quite some time and that they are working "together" at securing new sponsorships (more than once) that should be announced by early January. Legault reiterated he wants this race to be a success and that Champ Car help was appreciated in the process.

Legault wants this race to be a success? Well, I suppose he does, just so long as he doesn't get a handshake-deal from the Frances.

I am not so worried about Nascar. Legault deals with Ecclestone and needs F1. After the Indianapolis fiasco Ecclestone needed to find ways at pleasing TOny Goerge. I swear I've met Legault before and even thought Champ Car isn't his favorite type of racing (F1 is). He is the one that got Champ Car here in Montreal in the first place. I suspect someone else was playing his hand. A lot can happen in a year. The fact Patrick Carpentier is in the IRL hurt Montreal bad this year. A possible return could change things and a new Idianaplois race with positive results would put less pressure also. Let's be patient. Champ Car is working with Legault as we speak so...

Interesting that Molson went from promoting and sponsoring Toronto and Vancouver, sponsoring Montreal and Molstar producing CC telecasts to just sponsoring Toronto. Probably has something to do with the merger with Coors. IMO, at a pretty high executive level, it's taking a different path.

We saw a similar thing in the mid '90s with Labatt's - they went from owning the Blue Jays and being activist in production to being Belgian-owned and, well, just boring. Oh, they poached the title sponsorship of Hockey Night in Canada which had been Molson's for decades, but who notices? |

I suspect Molson wants out because of what happened to the race last year and the fact that it will be ending soon.
Legault has essentially already forced CC out of Montreal. In other words he has what he wants and the 2005 fiasco acheived the desired effect. If they're gone after 2006 why not try to cut the losses in 2006 or even turn a profit before Nascar or the IRL comes in 2007? |
