Yes, double points at Sonoma. I thought double points would have been awarded at Pocono, being a 500 mile race but no.

I'm watching an IndyCar race at Sonoma because it's an IndyCar race at Sonoma, not because double points.

Maybe it'll make for some increased interest or some more interesting storylines...

1. Josef Newgarden, 547 points
2. Scott Dixon, 516
3. Hélio Castroneves, 505
4. Simon Pagenaud, 504
5. Will Power, 464
6. Graham Rahal, 436

Newgarden has a nice 31-point advantage to Dixon, but Penske drivers are known for having choked by Dixon.

Castrneves and Pagenaud seem a bit too far away, but they can't be counted out.

With some 100 points at stake, Power is virtually out of contention.

I just look at it like it's the playoffs. Like in baseball, the postseason doesn't always produce a champion that was the actual best team all year (it says you're from the south, so if you're in braves country you would know all about that). Just by virtue of being the last games/race of the year it gets a little added weight.

Newgarden totally blew it at Watkins Glen, and now he's virtually tied in points with Dixon.

The points scale at Sonoma is:

o- 100-80-70-64-60 points for the top 5.
o- 56-52-48-44-40 points for the top 10.
o- 38-36-34... points for the next finishers

Extra points:

o- 1 point for pole position.
o- 1 point for leading a lap.
o- 2 points for most laps led.

Newgarden has a 3-point gap over Dixon. So with a few exceptions, the first driver to cross the finish line will win the championship.

If Hélio wins, he gets 639 points.

o- Newgarden would need a second place finish.
o- Dixon would need a second place finish and most laps led.

If Hélio finishes 2nd, he gets 618 points.

o- Newgarden would need to finish 5th.
o- Dixon would need to finish to finish 5th and take an extra point., or finish 4th

If Hélio finishes 3rd, he gets 608 points.

o- Newgarden would need to finish 8th.
o- Dixon would need to finish to finish 7th.

If Hélio finishes 4th, he gets 602 points.

o- Newgarden would need to finish 10th and take 2 extra points, or finish 9th.
o- Dixon would need to finish to finish 9th and take 2 extra points, or finish 8th.

o- Newgarden would need to finish 3rd.
o- Dixon would need to finish 3rd.

If Pagenaud finishes 2nd, he gets 606 points.

o- Newgarden would need to finish 9th and take 2 extra points, or finish 8th.
o- Dixon would need to finish to finish 8th and take 1 extra point, or finish 7th.

If Pagenaud finishes 3rd, he gets 596 points.

o- Newgarden would need to finish 12th.
o- Dixon would need to finish to finish 11th and take 1 extra point, or finish 10th.
