Matech Ford GT (GT1) - Motor Show Luxembourg

Officiale Press from Vincent Franssen
Press Officer International Motor Show Luxembourg

For what I understand, Matech will run a special version of a Ford GT in the VLN in 2008, to prepare the car for the GT1 Rules of 2009 (FIA/ACO, based on current GT2 rules); does anyone have any further infos ?

Just for an old fogey, please? What's VLN?

Sounds like a GT1 spec(ish) Ford GT for the Nurburgring 24 hours next year?
THAT should keep some of the Porsche teams awake at night...

As for the new GT1 regs, it should slot straight in, assuming it is still in homologation by then, as it's now out of production? Taking over where the Murcielago leaves off???

Anything goes as long as the brand of car is recognized by the German authorities (Kraftfahrtbundesamt IIRC). They don't allow Moslers for example...

The current Top-cars at the Ring 24h are somewhat like blown up GT2 - so not really GT1.
Ford has produced a batch of new chassis for the preperation of racecars after Matech requested them. So the homologation-period depends on how "end of production" is defined. Hornestly I don´t know the current wording / definition myself.

Sure that wing is GT1-legal? It extends past the rear bodywork.

I was under the impression that the VLN had its own ruleset. The winning Porsches look quite modified and I've heard about a 'spec' splitter. Though tehr is no doubt that endurance racing around the Nordscheiffe is a good development ground

I imagine its in VLN-spec (which does allow the rear wings to hang off like that), and not in its final GT1-specification that it wont need for another year.

What's the point in doing it in VLN spec for 1 year then GT1 for another? Why not 2 years in GT1?
Do they know something about the GT1 or VLN rules that we don't know?

The aim of Matech is to build it following the new GT1 technical rules from 2009 on. The new rules are not published yet and due in December. Matech will use this car at the Nordschleife as testbed for 2009 when “new style” GT1 cars will be allowed in a transition year along the current GT1/GT2 cars. Matech can´t enter this car in current GT1 competition.

So, the Ford GT is the only car that has versions in GT1, GT2 & GT3 as far as I know.

Is there any other car model who had done the same with or w/o factory backing?

This is because the GT1 rules in 2009 will be somewhat different than the GT1 rules in 2008...

Effectively GT2 cars split by engine capacity. <5.0l GT2, >5.5l GT1, between 5.0l-5.5l can homologate for either. Can't homologate the same model of car in GT1 and GT2.

e.g. Aston Martin could have a GT1 based on the DB9, but the GT2 must be based on another car (such as the V8 Vantage)

imo they should combine those two classes into one primary GT class and make GT3 the secondary GT class.
