McLaren.

But what is the significant difference between the three that did produce a six wheeler?

The Tyrrell was the only one to feature it's third set of rules at the front, and it was also the only one to race.

Well yes, but the March won hillclimbs in the hands of Roy Lane ...

Now, who can name the six-wheeler that ran at Indy and elsewhere in 1948 and 1949?

Yes indeedy!!!

Bill DeVore qualified it 20th and finished 12th in 1948, completing 190 laps. It competed several times more in 1948, but without significant success.

Jackie Holmes drove it at the Brickyard in 49, qualifying 17th and retiring on lap 65 with a broken drive-shaft. The following weekend he took it to 4th place on the dirt at Milwaukee in a 100-miler. Mark Hellings was well-placed in it at Trenton, but was eliminated in a last-lap accident and was classified 9th.

And in a busy weekend later in the year Jimmy Davies made his Championship debut in the car, finishing 8th at Syracuse and 6th at Detroit - it's 700 miles from Syracuse to Detroit and there were no freeways then ...

Indeed. In the 1976 Swedish Grand Prix, Jody Scheckter and Patrick Depailler finished one-two. Various other results for both drivers helped Scheckter finish 3rd overall (49 pts) and Depailler 4th (39 pts). The team finished 3rd in the WCC on 71 pts, equal with McLaren. But the cars were uncompetitive in 1977 and the idea was then dropped.

Didn't Palmer take the Williams up the Goodwood hill and claim the record?

Goodyear's inability to continue tyre development was the reason given by Tyrrell for not continuing... as Michelin came on strong, they were saying that the effort had to go into tyres everyone used.

The twin rear axles always made more sense, reduced frontal area, used existing front tyre sizes.

Martin Stretton is running one of the Tyrrels very successfully. I believe Avon are making the tyres.

Yes, he would be unable to run it without some cooperation like that. Which was the problem Tyrrell faced, but on a grander scale...

OK the net result of a (fairly drunken) debate in the pub is a few contested questions that maybe someone out there can answer:

1. Is there theoretically another slot left on the grid after Toyota joins (that of the abortive Honda team).

2. What was the evolution of Sauber (i.e. does it contain the remains of another team, like Prost is the evolution of Ligier and BAR of Tyrell).

3. Ditto Arrows.

4. Who now owns the old Simtek, Larrouse, Forti, Shannon and Lotus teams?

5. Since Jordan started apparently 13 teams have folded completely (not including the likes of Ligier and Tyrrell) What were they (other then the five mentioned above)?

Toyota are taking up the last slot on the grid, so if another team wants to enter into F1, they would have to buy out an existing team.

Teams to have folded:
Lola(93); Lotus; Brabham; Dallara; Leyton House; Fondmetal; Lambo; AGS; March; Venturi; Moda; Pacific; Lola(97) - I think that's it apart from the other teams you've mentioned.

Nope. That's it. There used to be more space but Bernie says no.

Nope. It came out of Sportscar racing and was always Sauber. It had the support of Mercedes to start with but has been independent for most of its F1 presence.

Ah Arrows. 1977 Jackie Oliver was racing for Shadow. Alan Rees was team manager and there was a designer but the name escapes.

They left Shadow under slightly iffy circs and set up Arrows. The FA1 was a good looking car but it bore too much of a resemblance to the Shadow DN9 (I think) and after a court battle they changed the design. This was about half way through the season (1978). Patrese debut the car and lead in his first race until the car let him down.

Shortly after the Shadow case the main sponsor and financier was arrested and the cars dropped the "F" from the type number.

Don't know about the first lot but David Hunt (James' brother) owns the Lotus F1 team.
