I would play it safe and cut out panels in 1mill ally sheet.Saves the hassle and makes the doors look finished.

The door cards are not full size so they won't do the job.
I will cover it over in aluminium. Thanks fellas. |

we had scrutineering issues at LMC with no door cards, FiA scrutes wanted panels to stop hands getting trapped in orrifices should you have an accident.
annoying as it was at the time it made sense, just something as light as possible to cover the hole, thin ally sheet and paint it black, always looks better than plain IMO. In France we used cardboard and gaffer tape!!! |

Do your series regs. not allow you to reskin the outer surface of the door in aluminium? Even more weight saving!

I've just bought some ally to do the job.
I can use fibreglass doors if I wish, the fit is rubbish though. |

GRP doors aren't available for my car, so I made my own.
Made two moulds, from the inner and outer shells. Then castings were 'glued' together with more resin. 5kgs each, with the door hardware, no glass. 'Glass' replaced by PolyU hinged to the A-posts. Can't post pics here easily; send you copies if you PM me. John |

I also took all sound deadening material off from everywhere and replaced most nuts n bolts with lightweight aircraft ones, also I made a complete exhaust system from the manifold back from aluminium as are the shock absorbers, with lexan polycarbonate screens and windows. The problem is with all weight reductions on a race car is that the cost involved isn't linear and the price starts to rocket the further you go. The car was modified in 1993 for a series with no minimum weight restriction and weighed 675 kilos in race trim. It also helps that I'm not a tellytubby ! |

Would you believe a weight reduction of 23kgs just by removing all of those pads Gordon,at least, thats what I've had out of my 'project'. Just started on the excess tinwork. |

After a number of years racing with a few "banger" drivers the weight on the Anglia has probably increased somewhat due to a few applications of P38 !

Door should by right be filled with impact absorbing foam
No xbars on the cage? |

Good idea, TWR.
What counts as 'energy absorbing foam'? Easy to fill with expanding polyurethane foam (too easy! could blow the door apart) but that's a lot of Cyanide generating stuff if there were a fire. What would you use? John |

As good an idea as it sounds,I think you would be better to leave the door as it is.Far better to get a door bar fitted!

A door bar will only be as good as what It's fitted to and as there's nothing substantial on that door to support anything why have something that could come crashing into you in a side impact and besides there's an impact bar on the cage.

You're quite right Tim,there is a bar, perhaps easiest the raise it another four or five inches. As for the foam, cant imagine that doing any good in an impact. |
