2014 British GP Volunteering
It's that time of the year again! The MSA is inviting you to volunteer for the GP next year (2014). For BMMC members Eric Ridler is putting the form and an explanation letter on our BMMC website tonight, so it should all be there for use by tomorrow. We will also be sending the forms to our newsletter editors to send out in their next newsletters or as a separate distribution.
Here are some rules/guidelines to note 1. You may apply for more than one duty (e.g. track and flag but must have done 12 days in each of the duties in 2013 (i.e. a minimum 24 days). 2. Please note that multi-day events count as individual days, e.g. a weekend event can count as two days. 3. Applications must be on the MSA form, please do not submit any additional sheets or generate your own on personal computers etc. 4. This application form should be used by everyone who wishes to volunteer. 5. Applications from novice/trainee officials unfortunately cannot be accepted. 6. If you are a member of more than one club please apply through one club only, multiple applications will not be accepted. 7. You must be available to sign-on on Thursday 3rd July 8. If for exceptional reasons (marriage, ill health, change of job etc.) you were unable to do 12 days then please submit an application with a short note of explanation. 9. Only circuit race days count Your forms must be sent to your club for accreditation - please note all BMMC ones need to be sent to ME - NOT your local comps sec or anyone else! A list of nominations will be published on www.msaevents.co.uk/bgp/marshals.php before Christmas. Any queries, please ask! Enjoy |

I am green badge and was lucky enough to be selected for this years GP.
I would like to apply next year. Duties this year have been 17 days flag and about 5 incident as I work towards my red badge. Can I apply to flag even though I haven't got the flag grade or will I miss out as I haven't done sufficient incident days. |

Apply for flag - you will not qualify for incident, but can be considered for flag

This is something that every marshal wants to do. So go for it.
When you get older and more worldly-wise then you will realise that the best way to see the GP is via Sky TV. But while you are young and vigorous then do try to get to do it, whatever role you play. Some of my best experiences of marshalling were at the GP - not necessarily trackside! (BTW I did do night shifts around the campsites....) It is an experience that can only happen to you if you wear the orange/black. |

OK OK, not the same discussion over and over again please...it's been done to death every year when this thread goes up.
Feel free to start your own "Why I don't want to do the GP thread" if you wish but please leave this one to serve its purpose. Thanks. |

Chris,
On the BMMC website, the deadline to get the forms to you (from BMMC members) is 17th Nov. Can the Brands Britcar meeting (23rd-24th Nov) be included in the list, even though it wouldn't have taken place? I may end up needing it to get to the 12 days on a single discipline. Many thanks Stephen |

Stephen, include the meeting days
Black merc, ignore the incorrect comments. Track marshals are allowed to volunteer for flag if they have enough flagging days - however a more experienced flag grade may get priority if they are oversubscribed |

The "Flag" grade is a bit of an oddity (bit a bit OT to explain here) |

... come to think of it, there has been talk of experienced / red badge being a minimum to be accepted as flag, in previous years .... but at the end of the day, each year is different, so best advice is to apply, and keep your fingers crossed until January

I aplied for the GP this year as either a track or flag marshal as I had completed about 15 days marshalling as flag and incident. I was graded a track marshal with the MSA and I was lucky enough to be a flag marshal so it is definitely worth applying for
