Do you race your road car?

Seems we are all performance fans here so just wanted to know if anyone races there street car. If so in what manner. I've done a little but the cost:reward ratio was much more than I could afford.

I used to sprint and hillclimb my only road car, a Sabre Six GT, back in the 70's and just about managed to keep it running on the road on a daily basis. Did the same a bit later with a Scimtar Coupe and then a Ginetta G15 in the 80's. I imagine it would be pretty difficult to do now; modern cars are so sophisticated, with all their electronic gadgetry etc, I guess the risk of not being able to go to work in it the day after an event is generally, too high. Then of course, there is the risk of a prang, really a no no if you need the car next day! Historic racers often use cars that they also use on the road but most probably have something more modern to use on a daily basis.

I've raced my road car (85 BMW 323i) once. Autocrossed it. Way faster than anyone in my class on the practice lap. The radiator broke on my first timed lap. Thus ends my car's racing career. She is still running strong after 305,000km, just not in an all out race situation.

Used to motorkhana my first car but the risk of damage made me buy a cheap dedicated car.

Was one of the first to sign up for the Road saloon series twenty years ago, drove to the circuit, raced and drove home again (most of the time). Also used road cars for sprints/hillclimbs/road rallies etc. John - have also competed in a Sabre - Illuminations Rally - directing Geoff Cooper.

I use my 308 in the club hill/sprint series but because of the struggle to get a race seat to fit am not doing our new race series for road legal cars

I drag race my Mustang. My best so far is a 13.2/106.5 mph .With slicks,it would probably run a 12.8,but I'm not sure how long the stock rear end would last. Our track is at 3600 ft elevation, which hurts performance somewhat. I started to Solo 2 my Focus this year. After nine events, I'm third in my class. I drive the Mustang every weekend ,and the Focus every day.

GTV27 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I've been running my 1974 Alfa GTV in sprints and hillclimbs for the last 6 years or so.

It is a road car and gets driven to and from the circuits. However, this does create extra problems in having to also arrange for racing wheels and tyres to be transported (either in the car - squishy - or by a friend) and the problem of getting home if a fault or accident happens.

Also, being a road car means that it can't be as highly tuned as a dedicated racing car - I'd run wilder cams, a shorter diff and lower ride height if it went to the track on a trailer. Still its been reasonably competitive and wins more than it loses.

edited for stupid typos

RX72C, if you're intersted in circuit racing or track days/supersprints, contact the NSWIPRA or the ARDC or the NSWRRC. They will tell you how you can get involved and have some serious fun in your RX7 at Oran Park or EC.

took my moms car (I drive a van, hers is an accord) to a track day and fried all four brake pads and rotors and severly boiled the brake fluid, in the first 10 laps. Drove home with brakes tha barely worked and sounded like nails on a chalkboard

I sprint my car occasionally. It does spend a lot of time on track. Be that compatative or for fun. BTW haven't got a M Coupe anymore so really should change my login ID.
