My sincere condolances to the Geoghegan family. Big Pete was a legend, brilliant car control and fiercly competitive.
This really hasn't been a good year for motorsport. |

Condolences to the Geoghegan family, friends, and associates.
Whilst I am too young to go walking down memory lane, I am sure it is a great place. |

It's a pity everyone has not had the pleasure to see Pete Geoghegan race. His battles with Alan Moffat, Bob Jane, Norm Beechey, Jim McKeown, Neil Allen, Peter Manton etc are legendary. Glad i didn't miss it.

I had the good fortune to navigate for Pete for a week in the Repco Mountain Rally in 1998. A great character and driver to boot. Memories of that week will stay with me forever. He made that old Jag do things that were simply breathtaking and brilliant at the same time.
I cannot find the words to express my sadness at his passing. Race every day in heaven "Pete". Thanks for all the memories, recent and long past. |

Never really heard of him other than being equal recorder holder for most championship with Dicky and Skaifey.... but a loss none the less. The motorsport community has lost far too many this year...

Vale Big Pete you will be missed but your memory will live on. A shy gentleman, and a true sportsman with car control that left others in awe. |

I was very saddened to learn of his death. Geoghegan set a benchmark in the history of the ATCC that has been equalled, but never beaten.
Just a slice of his achievements: 1961 2nd Australian Touring Car Championship (Jaguar Mk II 3.4) 1962 1st Bathurst 6 Hour (Daimler SP250) 1964 1st Australian Touring Car Championship (Ford Cortina GT) 1964 6th Bathurst 500 (Ford Cortina GT) 1965 2nd Australian Touring Car Championship (Ford Cortina Lotus) 1966 1st Australian Touring Car Championship (Ford Mustang) 1967 1st Australian Touring Car Championship (Ford Mustang) 1967 2nd Bathurst 500 (Ford Falcon XR GT) 1968 1st Australian Touring Car Championship (Ford Mustang) 1969 1st Australian Touring Car Championship (Ford Mustang) 1969 5th Bathurst 500 (Ford Falcon XW GTHO) 1970 4th Australian Touring Car Championship (Ford Mustang) 1971 3rd Australian Touring Car Championship (Ford Mustang) 1972 4th Australian Touring Car Championship (Ford Falcon XY) 1973 8th Australian Touring Car Championship (Chrysler Valiant Charger) 1973 1st Bathurst 1000 (Ford Falcon XA GT) 1976 1st Australian Sports Car Championship (Porsche Carrera) 1980 3rd Bathurst 1000 (Holden Commodore VC) |

Pete will be best remembered by me for the dice he & Moffat had at Bathurst in Easter 72. The dice they had is the stuff of folklore. Moffat's Mustang with oil all over his windscreen from Big Pete's Falcon & Moffat having to loosen his harness to see out of the cockpit going down conrod. No chase back then, flat out over the infamous second hump. The two cars supposedly came very "close" over the last hump on conrod and the lap record was broken on more than one occasion. Moff put in a protest but the officals gave it to Pete. Pete's third place at Bathurst in 1980 is also a showcase of what the man could do, having never seen the car before brought it home with the owner Paul Gulson for 3rd.

RIP 'Pete'. Your car control was legendary. The Mustang, Super Falcon, etc.
I first saw him race at Sandown in 1963 racing a Lotus 23. Deepest sympathy to the Geoghegan family. Last edited by mickj; 17 Nov 2003 at 02:10. |
