Milwaukee Lighting

What happens if the lighting fails late in the race?
I only ask as I have been to many footnball games in the UK where the ligts have totally failed and the sudden darkness is startling. I can't imagine the consequences of this happening during a closely fought battle at 200+mph.

I would assume that the lighting is powered by their own generators. And I'm hoping that the systems are redundant!

Hello, Paul!

Nice to see you here in the CART Forum - and you asked a good question.

To prevent a problem like the one you mentioned, the lighting circuits were wired in parallel sections, so each lighting set was divided in two sub-groups. Hence, if a failure is experienced in a certain section of the track (say, entrey of Turn 1), only half of the lighting spots at that area would go dark. The visibility would be compormised, and the race would quite likely be stopped, but it would avoid having the cars driving into a "black hole".

Also, there were emergency generators to reduce the risk of a black-out in case the main power supply would go down.

Musco, the company responsible for the lightening up the Milwaukee Mile, is used with this sort of event and I have to recognize that they did a very good job. The fixtures were surpisingly few, and they were located in such a way that they did not shine directly in the face of the drivers, officials and spectators.

Musco uses high-efficiency fixtures, and the whole track looked flooded with light. Well done.

There is always the risk of a catastrophic failure of some sorts, and having the whole track dark at the same time - but, hey, motorsports are about risks...

I am attaching some pictures of the track at night. These are front and back straights, and pitlane...

It looks way cool at night...is this going to be the norm for this race do you know? Looks like I need to get my wife down the gym 4 times a day so I "have" to bring her over
