Ralf Firman
After missing out on the 2nd Jordan seat Ralf Firman has indicated he would look at a move to America, to either Champ Car or the IRL. The 2002 Formula Nippon would be a great asset to the 2004 Champ Car championship. I hope he can get a ride in the series

me to , after not really knowing a great deal about him , I thought he did a very respectable job in 03 just a shame he couldnt build on that for 04 in F1 , but if he can land a CART deal that would be good to see as well.

I think he's a fair enough driver, not a superstar but can bring the goods, so yeah, it'd be great to have him.

Firman won the Nippon series in 2002, and it was won in the past by people like Ralf Schumacher, and other race winners like Eddie Irvine, Tom Christensen and Tora Takagi, who took the championship in the year between leaving tyrrell and joining Mo Nunns CART team. Firman is good, it was Jordan who let him down.

Certainly give him a shot. A number of good drivers have proven what they're really made of with their fair chance in CART.

What the source of such rumour?
And what can let us think that "either Champ Car or IRL" means Champ Car? |

Not just a rumour - "my first choice would be to race in a highly competitive single-seater series such as Champ Car or IRL in America"

i have to agree that he would be a good addition. i feel he did respectively in 03 up against renowned gun fisichella, and in the not so competitive jordan. hopefully he can get a decent ride if it is what he decides to do

It did take him 6 years to win in Nippon though, although only 2 of those were in the most competitive car. In F1 he was occasionally bafflingly slow, but he improved as the season went on, until the crash in Hungary which seemed to really affect him.
I don't think he's a great driver, but he could do his bit in ChampCars, but maybe Formula 1 dropouts aren't what the series needs right now, considering the lack of US drivers. There aren't many funded rides available, and better guys than Ralph are looking for them. Takagi never raced for Mo Nunn's CART team. He did 2 years with Walker in CART, then went to IRL with Mo - both drives thanks to Toyota backing. |

There's a distinction to be made between F1 has-beens and younger guys that maybe didn't get a chance to show what they could do. Ideally, this could generate attention and sponsors (who might be more willing to back an ex-F1 pilot, especially if OWRS aims internationally) in order to build a stronger series that could attract and support home-grown talent. |

my question wasn't maybe well asked; I had no polemic intentions, juts to verify whether such a hypothesis (that of coming to CC instead of IRL) was supported by elements or just a pour-parler. |

If he goes to IRL they'd have to re-name it the British racing league...how many would that be??
For the sake of keeping SOME Champ Car coverage in this country, I hope he does come to Champ Car, Justin Wilson too.....otherwise the letters pages of Autosport will be filled with people pleading with readers to watch the 12 thousand or so British drivers in the other series! Well, that's my selfish reasons, and I'm sticking to them! Ralph Firman BTW! Last edited by codename_47; 16 Feb 2004 at 16:17. |

The guy was terribly over-rated by many during his time at Jordan. He's a good driver but would never have achieved anything in F1.
Welcome addition to ChampCar IF he chooses to come... |

I heard yesterday from a very well informed source that Firman has indeed maintained "contacts" with Walker for the last weeks (actually pre-dating Firman's announcement about his interest on racing in North America).

I think he's a decent driver who's acheived a fair bit in his time. He's also better than some of the current drivers on the grid, so that, in my opinion, would make him a welcome addition. And he has a sense of humour too:
