Rufforth

Anyone have any memories of this circuit on the outskirts of York? Basically an RAF base, several times a year it took on a new role as a racing circuit. One thing you could always guarantee - Tony Dean would always win the Libre race.

We were there in '73 and all I can remember now apart from winning, was that if you clipped the bollards or curbs, you could move them back a shade. Some Esse-bend got quicker and quicker!

And before your time John there were the straw bales. Here Brian Robinson, Barry Pearson and Geoff Wood manage to miss them in 68.

But a bit later Wood can't resist a small short cut chasing Harry Ratcliffe.

Invariably so, Davemorganfan, but not when the Kincraft was there in the hands of Jim Moore. So we have a link with the Kincraft thread! There was a very strong Formula Libre championship at the Northern circuits during the 60s/70s, with big engined single seaters, F2, F3, GT and sports cars all mixing it.

Friend of mine entered his one and only race in a Formula 3 Trevithick at Rufforth in September 1959.

And do you think I can find a programme for it anywhere....!

Dave, that shot of the Kincraft is magnificent! Tempted to talk tou you about buying a re-print. That is exactly how I remember the car from my childhood, Jim Moore, silver crash hat and that lovely Ford 4.7 howl from the GT40 motor.

Another libre shot, this time in 69 of a Cooper T86-BRM, but I don't know who the bearded driver is, any offers?

Haven't a clue. Is it Bernard White? More great shots Dave. Indebted.

Definitely not Bernard White, John. He had a Tasman BRM amongst other exotic racing machinery but hired proper racing drivers to race them.

A quick check of my database reveals that beards were rare in Cooper T86Bs. That would be John Scott Davis in T86B F1-4-68.

Didn't John Scott-Davies also race a 'hairy' Cortina mk1 with V8 power? About 1967 / 68ish?

I think John Scott-Davies raced in Australia around the early '70's. Had an altercation with the Officials and got banned.
