Alpina should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Just bought a peugeot

Couldn't resist it. 205 Gti 1.9 comes with blown headgasket and engine in bits!
Are these engines prone to head gasket failure? Or can I just slap it back together again?
It is a project car so it won't be going back on the road and it will end its days as a a race warrior providing i can get it going again.

congratulations - no idea about the headgasket eating propensities of pugs (but that's a pretty common engine so it should be OK), but hope you have fun sorting it into a little pocket rocket.

I paid £150 but the engine was in bits. had to push it on the trailer and tow it with my Scooby. Will try sticking it back together again as I can't see why the headgasket failed.

The only common problem I know of with that engine is valve stem oil seal wear - anything over 50,000 miles & they are likely to be worn enough to cause a lot of smoking & high oil consumption, so while the heads off it would be worthwhile replacing them. I'd also replace the camshaft oil seals - not, as far as I know, a common problem, but I had one fail on my 405SRi (same engine).

Hey that thing should be a great track day car. Get it going and enjoy. As the heads off, get it machined and throw some cams at it and..........

As you've bought the car with the head removed, check the position of the liners before reassembly - if the engine's been turned over since the head was removed, the liners may have moved.

So I was informed after I cranked it to check the bores! Seems straight enough but I will get them measured before I go any further.
Been offered a Soarer as a swap.....Really!
On the lookout for a cage and gravel spec rear suspension.
I will have to change forums soon as it won't be a road car much longer.

Those wheels are worth more than the car..

Seriously, nice little car and there's a lot of them used in competition so there must be something good about them.

I think you saw plenty of them at the KNockhill Rallycross!
They weigh less than 900kg and have 130bhp. That is why they go so well.

Yeh class of the field they were. Is that the road car that weighs 900kg ?

My family has suggested to me in the past I should save up for something like a Pug 205 GTi and do hillclimbs and those sort of things with it. Where would be the best place to look for one? (adtrader I imagine..)

Yup the road car kerb weight. I suggest yopu wait until I learn how to prepare one and buy it off me at a serious profit of course so I can buy shiney bits for my rally car.
Just watch the local papers.

The alloys will be sold. I will pick up standard alloys to run and use the difference for racing bits.
Can't sell them at the moment cos I need to roll the car around. I have a big house move in 3 weeks. Moving from Aberdeen to Fife.

Closer to me then...let me know about those alloys because apparently Peugeot wheels fit Fords but not the other way around, would look nice on my Escort...

Should ask what size they are..15, 16" I guess?

Peugeot wheels definately do fit Fords but not the other way around. I run 15" speedlines on my Fiesta rally car.
the wheels are "Titanium" 15" with new Heron tyres on them.
I will give you a shout when i can sell them.

I may have another 1600gti 205 coming up. needs work though. Would you be interested?

pm checked and replied to.

Done a bit of research and it seems 205 gti's are best left alone. Anyone done any tuning to them?
