Q1. Don't know, but would guess around 1935. The track was built as a make work project during the depression.
Q2. IMS was built in 1909 and the first 500 mile race was in 1911. Won by Ray Harroun in a Marmon Wasp, 6 cyl. 447 cubic inches. The only 1-man car in the race. Q3.My guess is 1967 [This message has been edited by Hans.ca (edited 10 January 2000).] |

Q1. A tricky question this one is.
The circuit opened in 1927 and the first race was held in the same year. But I'm not quite sure which race that was. I know the German GP of 1927 was won by Otto Merz from Germany in a Mercedes-Benz. But Rudolf Caracciola, another German, won a Sportscar race in 1927 with a Mercedes-Benz S type. I don't know which of these two races was held first. |

Marcus, I've done some research about the Nurburgring, and where to find better results than at the Rings' own website.
Building started in 1925 and the track was opened the 18th of June 1927. www.nuerburgring.de |

1927 is correct, and it was the the sports car race, and not the GP (although cars in both categories had been the same in those days). It was in fact great Rudolf Carracciola, and the correct type of the car was 27/680 S. 27 described the tax HP, 680 the engine size of 6.8 ltr, and the "S" stoods for "Sport". By the way, the car is still existing today in the hands of a German collector.
