Rounds 12: Big Machine Spiked Coolers Grand Prix, Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Aug 13
Rounds 12: Big Machine Spiked Coolers Grand Prix, Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Aug 13-14.
With free practice starting on Friday at 3:00pm ET, this Saturday will see the second race of the season at the Grand Prix circuit at IMS, the Big Machine Spiked Coolers Grand Prix. Last year, as part of the revised calendar due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a second event was hosted at the IMS Grand Prix circuit, the Harvest Grand Prix from October 1-3. It was the fifth double-header of the season. This year this second event at the IMS Grand Prix circuit has remained on the calendar, though unlike last year this will be just a single race, consisting of 85 laps. Saturday's race will have another large entry list, consisting of 28 drivers. This follows last weekend's inaugural Big Machine Music City Grand Prix in Nashville, which had an entry list of 27. The largest field to compete outside of the Indy 500, was the abandoned Round 17 of the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series at Las Vegas, with a field of 34 cars. Now that's a big grid. The start, restarts and pitting will be chaotic.

It's a little easier with the wide front straight although the final turn tightens the field a bit. And importantly the visibility is much better if someone is doing the slow roll restart strategy

The start of the race has barely been without a major incident, the exceptions being 2017 and last year.

Newgarden gets a six-position starting grid penalty for an unapproved engine change.

Palou quickest in first practice. Lundgaard quick, just a tick quicker than Rahal in P7. Seven guys within .3 of Palou's time.

Pato O'Ward on pole, followed by Will Power, Romain Grosjean and Christian Lundgaard.
It's turning into one helluva debut for Lundgaard. Qualifying is one thing, however - knowing IndyCar, the race will be something completely different. He better sharpen his elbows... |

Qualifying result:
An impressive qualifying debut from Christian Lundgaard. Reigning champion and second place championship contender Dixon, is way down in 26th place. after spinning on his final lap trying to get into the Fast Six. |

Missed the start, was thinking 130 so catch up mode but race looks pretty clean this week. Guessing everyone decided last week was a mess and no repeat. Fewer crazy moves with a bit of understanding and room given when they tried.

Sounds like people are getting a bit confused between Jack Harvey's car and Alexander Rossi's car. Different teams but with similar liveries, both with AutoNation sponsorship on the rear wing. It's been a long battle between these two.
Edit: Rossi got past Harvey. Last edited by bjohnsonsmith; 14 Aug 2021 at 18:20. Reason: Edit |

That's Palou's race run. Looks like a blown turbo.
First FCY, though it seems totally unnecessary. |

An Indy car engine failure, been a while it seems. Turbo or engine itself, sounded like Palou says the power went quick and shut down. Either way that's probably another 6 places in Portland for him

Excellent restart from Ro Gro, as he goes into 2nd.

That wasn't so nice there Scotty. And Will is not your biggest fan right now. But Romain has no P2P left so Will might be in the best seat with 74 seconds

It's all getting a bit aggressive at IMS.

This really is going to change things at the top of the championship standings with Oward taking fifth in Dixon and 17th and Palou even lower. Herta gets on the podium but has to be really mad about missing out on second place points last week. He could be right back into the thick of the championship hunt had he just maintained that position. |

Maybe initially a little conservative after the Nashville Big Machine race, otherwise it was overall a good race.
That was Power's 40th win, with a much needed win for Penske and for Chevrolet. Power is now fifth on the all-time winners list. O’Ward is now within 21 points of championship leader Alex Palou, after his sudden retirement, due to engine mapping. Dixon drops to third on 381 points, with Newgarden knocking on the door on 360 points. |

Anybody have any pictures of an Indycar and Stock car together in the same shot? They should have done a mass grid photo of the grids from the two series together.
