The GROAT - A bracket to determine (just for fun)
Having previously ran a GOAT and COAT bracket - the ten-tenths voters decided unanimously in controversial fashion and with no official status whatsoever, that:
The greatest F1 driver of all time is Ayrton Senna, beating Lewis Hamilton in the final. The greatest F1 car of all time is the McLaren MP4/4, beating the Williams FW14 in the final. So what is the Greatest Race of All Time (GROAT). Ideally, this will be a 64+ strong bracket - so I need nominations. For now, which race do you think warrants discussion as being a GROAT. I have a few lined up, but please feel free to drop nominations in this thread and I'll get the bracket up and running. *** I don't think Spa 2021 will make the bracket *** |

Great idea and thank you for organizing. Can I please suggest Spa 1998, Suzuka 2005 and Montreal 2011 for consideration.

Can we add
Adelaide 1986. Mexico 1964. Nurburgring 1957. Monza 1971. And some others for inspiration: https://dive-bomb.com/2021/04/04/10-...f1-races-ever/ https://www.redeyeevents.co.uk/news/...es-in-history/ If I remember correctly Motorsport or Autosport had a mammoth top 100 when we reached 1000 GP. Can’t find a link though. Last edited by Adam43; 26 Nov 2021 at 15:16. |

Okay, here is a list I have come up with.
Hungary 2021 Britain 2021 Sakhir 2020 Turkey 2020 Italy 2020 Britain 2020 Germany 2019 Britain 2019 Austria 2019 Baku 2017 Abu Dhabi 2016 Hungary 2014 Canada 2014 Bahrain 2014 Brazil 2012 Spain 2012 Malaysia 2012 Canada 2011 (my pick for the GROAT) Abu Dhabi 2010 Brazil 2009 Belgium 2009 Brazil 2008 Britain 2008 Brazil 2006 Japan 2005 Monaco 2004 Brazil 2003 Europe 1999 Belgium 1998 Hungary 1997 Monaco 1996 Spain 1996 Canada 1995 Donington 1993 Monaco 1992 Japan 1989 Australia 1986 Jarama 1981 Fuji 1976 Italy 1971 Germany 1957 I have forgotten loads from older seasons which I will add later if they spring to mind. Generally, we will all be biased towards races we saw live because we didn't know the outcome while watching it, so that's why Canada 2011 rates as my best race and there are a lot more from recent seasons. I would also suggest perhaps including controversial but memorable races, such as Indy 2005, Germany 2010, Jerez 1997 because really the aim of this is just to make sure any possibilities are covered. I would suggest the following as controversial races that could be included, even if the majority would most definitely not see them as among the greatest: Spa 2021 (yes, really) Germany 2010 Singapore 2008 Indianapolis 2005 Jerez 1997 Adelaide 1994 Japan 1990 Japan 1989 Monaco 1984 Sweden 1978 I hope this helps. |

If you need any more nominations maybe Spa 2000 and Britain 1987 for the famous overtakes.

Thanks for doing this crm, I wonder if there are any more 'OATs' still capable of being
voted on? |

late addition but one race i dont see on there that jumped out to me.
France 2004 - Schumi/Ferrari 4 stop race to beat the faster Alonso. actually been a few really good Schumi at Magny Cours races. brazil 2016 - Max's first win feel like there might be a list for best maiden wins or best win in front of one's home crowd. maybe also a short list, but best team principle, best engineer, or best team personnel overall? maybe one tourney for them all? |

An interesting observation (IMO) - of the current circuits in use, the following did not make the potential GROAT list:
Imola Portimão Sochi Lusail Jeddah Two of those are obviously new additions - so does that mean Imola, Portimão and Sochi should be dropped from the calendar? |

Wouldn’t win overall but there have been some good races at Imola and better than some on that list
One of the first big battles between Prost and Senna was at Imola 1985. The Alonso Schumacher one in 2005 (ruined by ads and also probably seemed better than most in that period of F1). |
