Rallycross v Formula One at Fastfest
I was at Fastfest yesterday to see the F1 v Rallycross head to head challenge. Derrick Jobb's Ford Escort looked fantastic with its new bodywork and colour scheme. Now in proper Tony Bardy Motorsport colours!!
In the head to head the Formula 1 car won by four tenths of a second. They use some sort of special glue on top of the tarmac surface, which meant that the Escort lost some of its advantage away from the startline due to traction problems. There was just way too much grip which was causing the car to bog down off the startline. Tommi Walmsley, Andy Brinkley, Richard Wakeling's MG (driven by his engine builder), Paul Wakeling, Craig Popperwell, Neil Wade, Brian Wade and Terry Briggs also took part in the event representing rallycross on 'the strip' and on the open championship stand. I'm sure the Escort would have been much closer (or even beaten the F1) if it was running in original spec without the restrictor and another 150bhp. Can't believe the Escort is still on the pace - it must be at least 10 years old. The car also runs very primitive but reliable rear axle!

I have to agree. that Escort had to be one of the quickest cars away from the startline, when John Haffey had it.
Mind you it occasionally left it's transmission, in a heap on the floor in those days |

In defence of the F1 Jordan it is also 10/11 years old and not running the horsepower it would have done when it was current.
Pleased it was close as I don't think either deserved to lose. |

Hi there,
I was the driver of the F1 car. Hope you all had a great time!! We honestly thought the rally car would beat us, but as he suffered from lack of traction so did we....We struggled off the start big time!! have any of you seen the videos on youtube??? There are some of that awesome jet car!! |

Hi Jodie
Yes you struggled big time off the line with lack of traction !!! As for our Rallycross car ,Derrick just had to much grip and bogged down and thats no mean feat to kill 500 + HP ! Glad you managed to do some runs after all the problems you had ! Hope we can do it again hopefully when its drier! |

Is an intersting point about grip coz in drag racing the big teams race on traction compund on the surface.
Having walked over the Pod asphalt once, I can tell you the surface is somewhat akin to sponge, amazing that vehicles of any type cant get grip on that. I know you are awrned at Run What you Brungs to not be too fierce at the start as you will break trannys in standad cars! Interetsing to note then that both these cars were struggling, wonder of the compound had been affected by weather?? BTW, without the compund a lot of the quick times would not be able to be run, the big cars simply have so much power even they would struggle to dial in to basic asphalt, the tracks in the US are coated in this stuff too. |

I think a non restricted RC (like Per's Pikes Peak 9-3) would have similar 60 and 330 ft, but better 1/8 mile. It is kind of amazing the are semi track / road cars that will beat that F1 with ease... The Swedish Manta with Volvo engine does similar, Skylines and Supra's do even better! It makes you wonder there are lo |
