my question is - is there anything to gain from cheating in champcars? would anyone cheat? or is it better to just use your loaf and fiddle with the aerodynamics a la penske?

I don't think they have to cheat in Champ Cars. The grid is too evenly matched to make it necessary - and since there is no one Supreme Being in charge who can fiddle with the rules at will, the likelihood of being caught and "outed" is very great.

And the rules are more simple as well. The cars are more "basic" race cars than F1, not so hi-tech and all that. Cheating would be more difficult to get away with.

The IRL has a Supreme Being who can fiddle with the rules and regs at will. Q.E.D.

I think the fact that all of the cars are made in one of two factories simplifies it a lot...anything odd should stick out like a sore toe.

Who was it?
Say,
Who was it that said - there are two types of people in motorracing, loosers and cheats. Maybe it was me? |

I think it is much more difficult to cheat in CART or the IRL because ...
1. The rules adequately describe and proscribe the dimensions that body work, engine components, tires, and dimensions of the chassis must be. They can accurately measure them with CART and IRL supplied measuring equipment. CART and the IRL do not allow for any misreading by local scrutineers as does the FIA. 2. CART and the IRL provide their own inhouse and travelling scrutineers and do not rely on local volunteers to perform measurements and make decisions that can effect million dollar teams and races. Nothing against the volunteers at an F1 GP, but they are not privy to the thinking behind the rules as are the rules makers. 3. The rules and regulations are not changed haphazardly by CART or the IRL and must be approved by the sanctioning body, manufacturers and teams. Thus grooved tires would never happen in CART or the IRL becasue they would not all agree to such a drastic step. 4. When a team or manufacturer finds a way to improve their car or chassis and the board of scrutineers passes it as approved, no local scrutineer can make it illegal on a whim or because of some private agenda. This has happened in F1 on numerous ocassions. 5. CART and the IRL tend to be more even-handed in the application of rules and regulations than the ever political FIA. |
