Saleen S7-R Confusion
Good day,
I'm looking into updating my Saleen S7-R article on Ultimatecarpage.com with some new shots I got of the Oreca car. When I compared them with the older shots I have of the Graham Nash car I noticed the subtle exterior differences. When trying to figure out what the differences were I found out it was more than just a bodykit. There seems to be a difference in engines in the cars built by Ray Mallock and Saleen both in size and origin. The various sources are contradictory, and I was told the best thing to do was to ask for the insight of you guys. I'm most interested in the spec of the current car and the Ray Mallock car. Thanks WM |

There is not only a difference in the engines of the RML and Saleen built chassis, there are also differences in the engines within the RML built cars. F.e. the Konrad Saleen ran in Sebring with engines of different capacity and from different tuners. RML, Konrad and GNM used over the years engines of different tuners with sometimes different engines capacity, so this is really difficult to find out. Actually it seams that Acemco, Oreca and Zakspeed are using the 6999 cc engine.

What other capacity engine has been used in a Saleen, other than the 7 litre unit?

In Le Mans or GT? Really, a 6 litre?
I find that surprising and unusual. It must be a big waste of money to have to make engine modifications, and of course it takes up time too. Is there a shortage of the 7 litre unit? My understanding was that the Saleen started out with a Roush Ford Nascar based V8. Is this correct? More info on this subject would be good. |

Zakspeed's Saleen is a 7L.
Oreca's car apparently was a lot more quiet than all the other S7R's, but I believe its a 7L as well. There were rumors last year that Konrad would go to a 6L to fix his engine problems. I believe that never happened. - All the teams have stuck with the 7L. Don't quote me on that though.. |

If I recall correctly, in 2003, Konrad entered his Saleen in the Daytona 24 hour race. Did the Grand AM GTS rules for 2003 not require that all cars have a maximum displacement of 5 litres?

This mystic new chassis was rumoured yet again, this time for ALMS, I hope Konrad don’t want to build it with any Weickhardt money. In Sebring this year Konrad ran one Saleen with the 6.8 l and the other car with the 7l engine. |

Sample: http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/image...a1k06/2622.jpg A full event report can be found here: http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/frame...em.php&rid=103 In my article I'll just summarize what's known for sure and add that there is a lot of confusion about some details of the cars. Maybe that will spark some people 'in the know' to speak up. |

Its good to see the Saleens back towards the front. Does anybody know why ORECA turned down their Le Mans entry with this car despite it racing at Spa?
And is the ORECA car the next generation car to the Zakspeed car or are they pretty much the same??? |

This is what I made of it:
http://www.ultimatecarpage.com/frame...php&carnum=450 I'll keep tabs on things to see if I can find out more. Maybe the Acemco guys at Le Mans can give me more details. |

I’m afraid there are some mistakes in your article.
The first generation Saleens were not only prepared by RML, all of the first generation chassis were built by RML, also the ones used by Saleen in the US. Only the second, latest batch of cars, like the Acemco, DDO, Zakspeed and Oreca ones were built in California. For the 2001 and 2002 season Konrad Motorsports became official Saleen Works Team. |
