Rolex 24 at Daytona anyone?
Who else is going?
What to expect there, I know its 4 hours on 8 hours off, but since it's like the Indy Moto GP I have recently done, it seems we'll be locked in the middle of the inner track, and won't get very far without crossing the track I'm curious. --Russ |

Daytona has tunnels under the track for cars. Therefore you are not trapped on the infield.

Workers for the 24HR are provided by the Central Florida Region of SCCA.
Go to their website www.cfrscca.org and you will find a link to apply for credentials. The Pro Worker newsletter for the 24HR is usually up by late December or early January and provides detailed schedule. The worker corp consists of SCCA regions from around the country as well as guests from abroad. I have worked the 'bus stop' chicane on the back straight with Washington DC folks for a couple of years as well as a group from North Carolina region. Parking is outside of the track and they use shuttles to take you to the worker compound/break/meeting area inside the track. The weather is usually warm during the day and can be cold and damp at night. Practice and Qual is rotation of all hands and race day is 4 on/8 off. Have a good trip. |

some great deals out there for people from Mid Atlantic heading to Daytona
just booked my flight from DC to Orlando for $100 round trip + $2.50 for Megabus round trip to actually get there from NYC (man I hope there's no Blizzard come January 22nd) and unlike Daytona Beach airport, car rentals at Orlando are $66 a week ($105 with tax). not too bad considering the alternatives |

Interesting weekend this Rolex 24 at Daytona, that's for sure... my first 24 hour race went well.. I ended up working some 21 hours out of the 24 total, not to mention starting early in the morning for the support race and all the track activities before the 3:30pm start.
I'm usually pretty good at keeping pace of all the action but after attempting to get some rest (and failing to do so) I lost all track of what was happening on the 21st hour... it seems like we lost more than half the field when I left to take a nap in the car. Or maybe it was because I felt like a zombie being up for more than a day at that point. Our station, turn 5 was a magnet for incidents. Four direct and hard hits send us running for cover and then running back to put out the yellow flag. Made the local paper on one of those incidents when the driver had to be extricated, and suffered some broken bones. One of my fellow marshals who warned me of the first crash got hit by a flying tail light, which wasn't fun at all, but she was OK. I have to say that this first long enduro was nothing what I expected it to be. But I'd like to return next year, and perhaps do more 24 hour races... next stop is 12 hours of Bathurst. |

Never good when somebody gets hit by flying debri - could have ended rather differently...
Were you so understaffed that you had to work the entire day/most of the race? I'm not making a connection between these two remarks but... Sounds like you had fun though, Bathurst should be a cracker! |
