Britcar 24 hours - Safety Car regs
Correct me if I'm wrong, but don't the Safety Car regs in the Blue Book state that the pit exit will be closed from the moment the Safety Car comes into view until the last car has passed the pit exit (or words to that effect)?
So picture the scene. I take my 18 year old nephew to his first bit of night racing on Saturday night and try to explain to him the regulations. On quoting the above, I find myself amazed to see 4 or 5 cars held on a red light for 2 to 3 minutes at the pit exit whilst nothing is on the track & the "train" is long gone. Is this in the Supplementary regs for the Britcar? If I was a team manager for one of the cars, a visit to the C of C would have been in order. Any ideas? |

Andy, for this event the regs for pit exit were... they only go green after the crocodile has passed and then only to allow any cars waiting to leave. then switched to red... the reason to keep all cars together so the marshals can work in a safe enviroment without the fear of cars whizzing round trying to catch the back of the SC car & crocodile. Yours Roy

As the guy working the pit exit light for twelve of the twenty-four (not continuously!!), I could not have explained it better than Roy. In particular, the thought of having lone cars driving round to catch the tail in the dark, whilst marshals are on the track is scary. I tried to explain the delay to all the drivers held and all the drivers I spoke to were very relaxed with no tantrums, even the driver I had to stop who had left his pit shortly after the tail had exited Copse. Thanks to all the drivers for their patience.
Although attempts are being made to standardise Safety Car regulations, supplementary regs can add variences and it is not unknown for different regs to ne used at the same meeting, although increasinlgly rare. |
