It's Bruno!

This just in:

NEWMAN/HAAS RACING ADDS BRUNO JUNQUEIRA TO DRIVER LINEUP BEGINNING IN 2003

LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill. (November 5, 2002) --- Four time CART Championship team Newman/Haas Racing announced today that Brazilian driver Bruno Junqueira has been named to drive for the team beginning in 2003.

"Paul (Newman) and I were very impressed with Bruno's ability," said Carl A. Haas, co-owner of Newman/Haas Racing. "We think he can win many races for us
and we are looking forward to the season ahead."

In only his second season of CART competition, Junqueira, 25, is currently ranked second the 2002 CART FedEx Championship standings. In 2002, he won the
top starting spot on the short oval track in Japan, the road course in Elkhart Lake, Wis. and the street race in Denver as well as won races in Japan and Denver. In his rookie season in the series in 2001, he won one race and one
pole position and finished second to Scott Dixon for 2001 Jim Trueman Rookie of the Year. He won the 2000 FIA International F3000 Championship as well as the 1997 South American F3 Championship and was a test driver for the Williams Formula One race team in 2000.

"I'm happy to join Newman/Haas Racing," said Junqueira. "They have been the team to beat all season long and they have worked hard to win the Championship.
They have won many races and four Championships over the years and they are one of the most experienced teams. I'm looking forward to driving for Newman/Haas Racing."

Junqueira's name will be added to a list of current and previous team drivers such as Christian Fittipaldi and Cristiano da Matta, Mario Andretti (1983-1994), Michael Andretti (1989-1992, 1995-2000), Nigel Mansell (1993-1994) and Paul Tracy (1995).

Newman/Haas Racing, owned by actor/race car driver Paul Newman and racing entrepreneur Carl A. Haas is in their 20th season of CART competition and is the most successful active competitor with 68 race wins and 70 pole positions. For more information log on to www.newman-haas.com or www.cart.com.

HURRAH!

The jury's still out on whether or not I can call Bruno one of my "favourites." Something about his personality that just doesn't agree with me. But he certainly is a very talented driver, and I'm glad that he will remain in our series. I think he may well be the guy to beat in 2003.

What's going on with the sponsorship on Cristiano's car for next year? Is Havoline sticking around? Or is there the possibility that N/Haas may only field a single entry?

Will he be the 6 or the 11? And who'll be his teammate?

Based on the other thread about the second NH seat. My question is becoming "Will there be a second seat at Newman-Haas?"

Good to see Bruno in CART in '03.
He is a bit of a grizzler. If he could stop that I'd quite like him.
What do ya reckon. 1 more year for Bruno then back to F1

I'd say if there is a second car, due to his affiliation with Peggy Haas in Atlantics, Micheal Valiente would probably be a front runner.

I've got to worry about Chevron and Shell, both being what I assume are North American budgets and the involvement of either/nor in CART next year. Especially with the oil business not expected to do so well in the forseeable future and Chevron tanking right now. Then from what I read, Cialis has manufacturing problems, so Lilly may not ante up again and Fittipaldi had to drive that ugly car all year for no reason. Where are all these F3000 guys that are supposedly bringing budgets?

Peggy & Carl are husband and wife according to what I was told in Denver by Peggy. If not then she's probably still laughing.

...and this confirms it ;

No, there is no family relationship between Peggy Haas and Carl Haas. However, Peggy's uncle, Walter Haas, did own the Oakland A's once upon a time. And Carl Haas is the distributor of Swift race car parts in North America, and the Swift 014.a is the spec car for the CART Toyota Atlantic series.

Well, Bruno going to Newman-Haas comes as no surprise. Wonder who'll be in the second car? Tags? McNish?

Perhaps a new driver, fresh out of Atlantics?

At Surfers it was mentioned that Justin Wilson impressed in a test for Newman-Haas so he must be some chance for the second seat with the team.

Some exerpts from an article on CART.com...

Junqueira said he believes Newman/Haas represented his best chance for staying in CART. "For me, I want to race CART because I like the variety and the challenge," he said. "I've learned a lot about oval racing and I got a lot of publicity for winning the pole at the Indy 500 this year, but I don't want to race ovals all the time."

With Christian Fittipaldi departing for NASCAR (he'll make his Winston Cup debut this weekend at Phoenix), the second Newman/Haas seat is also open. Justin Wilson tested for the team several weeks ago at Homestead Speedway, and Player's/Forsythe Racing's Alex Tagliani is also in the frame.

But to the best of my knowledge, N/Hass hasn't secured any sponsorship yet for a second car.

Unfortunately, its been reported that Haas has been buying invisible chassis. Full season or just Indy who really knows right now, but, he's gonna need engines for them and given that the F1 deal for Chritiano has been driven by Toyota, well...can you say "engine deal"?
