I was racing a standard (tar) Arrow AX6 but because I am a big bloke (I race a clubman super heavy on the tar and STILL give away 10+ KG) I was getting the wind knocked out of me from bottoming out over the bumps and with the help from THE BEST kart shop I have been to we have modified what was my spare AX6 chassis by giving me more ground clearance to suit the dirt...and now no problems (except for driver brain fades!!!)
I race in the KT open class, which is the KT100s with modified ports etc (the stuff you would like to do to your clubman KT if it weren’t cheating!!). There is also a clubman class as well as midget/rookie and reed/rotary (open or International class) To keep dust and dirt out of the motor we run an air filter inside the "football" or airbox. A person of average size would have little trouble running a tar kart on the speedway if they only changed to grooved tyres or grooved an old set (I use grooved YEQ's) But the guns use specially designed chassis such as the Benson dirt kart and KCM chassis which look the same as a sprint kart. |

I've done just about all of my karting on dirt. There is an old kidney bean shaped track not too far away from here, I used to do the flagging so as a reward I'd get a punt around afterwards.
It was a water based circuit (there are a few oil based tracks around- they were great too, although a bit messy after a while!) so by late in the after there was a very well defined racing line, with a lot of rubber down (kind of what happens at the Speedway after the sprintcars have been racing all night). They just ran the standard classes- midgets, juniors, Clubmand lights and clubman heavies. So many memories....like the times an airbourne kart would whack into your past while you had your back turned, or when someone who take out a dirt wall...ahhhh those were the days |
