ELMS 2013 Discussion

(Apologies if there is a thread for this already, if so delete of merge)

Anyway, seems like the calender is out:

Quote:
#ELMS schedule just came out. Silverstone April 12-13, Imola May 17-18, Austria July 19-20, Hungary Sept 13-14, Paul Ricard Sept 27-28
via Tony DiZinno on Twitter. Story should be up on racer.com in a little while.

Weird of them to release it during the PLM race.

It's the final round of the ELMS so maybe not so weird.

Good to see the Silverstone double-header confirmed. A feast of sportscars a couple of months before the big one.

Happy to see the Red Bull Ring on the schedule, what a beautiful place. Any news on race distances?

Is it set in stone or is their scope to expand at all? I love it that ELMS is back, the season just seems a little short!

4.5 hours from what I've heard. I could imagine it being billed as 500 Miles, as that's just about as long as they'll travel in that period of time.

Edit: DSC says 3 hour races.

Three hours... Well, I guess the running costs will be low.

12-13.04 Silverstone GBR with FIA WEC
17-18.05 Imola ITA with FFSA GT Tour
19-20.07 Red Bull Ring AUT with World Series by Renault
13-14.09 Hungaroring HUN with World Series by Renault
27-28.09 Paul Ricard FRA with World Series by Renault

What about Official Test Session on Paul Ricard in March? And what's "FFSA GT Tour" ?

Three-hour races, two-day weekends, no changes to class structure - a good direction?

GT Tour is the French GT3 championship. Has seen better times, though, with grids down to 20-ish cars these days.

I'm typing this from memory so apologies if I'm wrong but those dates look vaguely familiar, I think these dates are going to clash with the WEC and ALMS. I'm going to check schedules now.

Hmm, somehow I don't think that calender will bring in masses of GT3 cars (if they want 3 hour races they might just as well stay in Blancpain), and without GT3s growing the GT-field will be challenging, to say the least.

Too right, they don't have a chance with British GT and Blancpain ruling the roost.

Blancpain has limited grid size in some events and is currently full, so, more probably will have to compete with the sprints and national championships.

BES Calendar:

14th April - Monza
2nd June - Silverstone
30th June - Paul Ricard
27th July - Spa 24 Hours
22nd Sept - Nürburgring 1000 km

As you see WEC & ELMS clashes with BES on first round.

I don't think BES actually had to turn away cars so far except maybe for Spa.

And then, ELMS doesn't have GT3 field of its own right now, they have to steal those teams from somewhere, and that includes BES.

Hm, 3 hour races for ELMS will make it less attractive for 3 drivers

How does 2 x 3h format actually reduce costs? I'm not doubting, but just asking how? You almost think it would be the opposite, since 2 x preparation.

No, that article is saying that the races are being reduced from 6 to 3 hours. No mention at all of two 3h races per weekend.

"Le changement intervient dans le format des courses avec des meetings de trois heures et non plus six."

Rough translation: The change is in the race format, with 3h races and no more 6h ones.

You're right, but even the English version on elms.com is extremely confusing.

http://www.europeanlemansseries.com/....php?news=2214

Quote:
"Each of the five race meetings will be held over two days, with practice on Friday and qualifying a 3-hour race on Saturday,"

"The move to two day events and three hour races has been done to help reduce costs."
"qualifying a 3-hour", is that supposed to say "qualifying and a 3-hour..."? That would make sense.

I think it might have been this 'translated' sentence which caused confusion.
