FIA GT Rnd 7: Mugello 15-17 Sep 2006
Montermini returns and joins Janis & Bert in a 3 driver line-up in the Zakspeed Saleen this weekend. He's already set the fastest time in practice.
We have a new GT1 entry, the Scuderia Playteam effort of Giannoccaro, Vilander & Pierguidi - in another Maserati MC12. (So no Zonda if you were expecting it!) The All-Inkl Lamborghini Murcielago is back again also, Leounberger & Bouchut again driving. Both JMB Ferrari's were fastest in practice for GT2, ahead of the AF Corse cars. |

Interesting to see the time comparissans between the 1997 GT1 and GT2 spec cars compared to this years.
1997: GT1:Schneider 1:41.865 GT2:Beretta (Viper) 1:51.973 2006: (So far) GT1:1:49.013 GT2:1:54.501 Will be interesting to see how close todays GT1 cars get to the pole time of the GT1 cars back in 1997, id say a 1:46 is possible, maybe a high 1:45 at best. The GT2 cars of today however seem to be much closer to the times of the cars we see today racing in GT1 that would have been in GT2 back in 1997. |

Saturday AM times
GT1 1:48.067 GT2 1:53.560 I'm sure that all of you are aware, but do keep in mind that today's 2006 GT1 = 1997 GT2 and 2006 GT2 = 1997 GT3. The progress of the GT2 cars in particular is quite stunning. |

Oh and, Bertolini & Bert share the front row.
The new Maserati is 3rd! Very impressive. Piccini down in 7th. Kirkaldy on pole for GT2. |

Hello
So wet qualifying and wet warm up so are we going to get a wet race? I don't know why the GLPK Corvette qualified so far back in 17th place but its fastest in warm up with an even slower time! Zakspeed Saleen second fastest in qualifying and warm up so should look good for them in the race as long as they avoid the Maserati's. Working as usual so I'm glad I'm recording this one. Nick |

Wet race...to start.
Shame the Playteam Maserati falling out from the lead after all Vilander's work (Loving the 'to be honest I was in the toilet' line about missing his team mate crash the car!). Fantastic first win for the Race Alliance Aston after all the trouble this year. Shame for Deletraz/Piccini losing so many places/points in the championship...did Janis hit him on the comeback? or was the damage from the first hit? Anyway, Janis...naturally 3s a lap faster than anyone else again! Moving up to a three car effort probably cost them the win! |

Kirkaldy aquaplaned and crashed before even passing the start line. Sugden was on some great charges today, all undone by Alexander David a bit. |

Hello
I've managed to watch the first hour and a bit of the race that I recorded before my girls cried enough because they wanted to watch a film on TV "Legally Blond". Anyway, I've got up to the bit where Vilander has come in with the leading Playteam Maserati MC12 and then his team mate goes out and half a lap later puts it into the armco. Two things. First, Vilander seems to be a very talanted driver bearing in mind his Maserati wasn't carrying any success ballast. Secondly I feel sorry for his team mate who was sent out on intermediates without having any experience of the track conditions. A tough call Nick |

The Playteam MC12 may not have had 'success' balast but it did have fairl considerable 'not full season entry' ballast

great drive from janis at the end, it's only a shame he got punted by the phoenix aston otherwise he might just have won. Admittedly he probably won't have but he was 5.5 seconds of the race alliance car at the end and 0.3 behind the 2 maseratis. The commentators seemed to think he was 9 seconds back from biagi with 2 laps to go.
I heard somewhere newcomers get 40kgs automatically added to the car, i don't know if thats right or not? |

Toni Vilander is a bona fide talent, no doubt about it. His appearances in Italian GT (or was it Spanish? I think not) last year probably showed that off to locals, but this year he has come of age on the international sportscar stage. He needs to temper his hotheadedness (putting Tiemann almost into the wall at ALMS Mosport) but his speed on courses he's not driven is compelling.
The other thing to note from this race, in case anyone had a doubt, is that Scuderia Playteam is a serious organization. Their performances in Italian, Spanish and International GTs certainly suggested this, but they seem to have prepared their Maserati to the level of the best FIAGT teams. |

Hello
Some really nice photos there leglizone considering the very wet and murky conditions. The tall shot of the green Aston Martin is very atmospheric. I really do like the shape of the Gillet Vertigo as well. Nick |
