March 74b
Hallo! A friend of mine has asked if I could make Gilles Villeneuve's Formula Atlantic cars in 43 scale. I've got a bit of info about March 742 (not FA) and 75b, but have nothing about 74b, just some photos. So, would be great if anybody can help with some bits of info:
Was the rear subframe asymmetric? Left one seemed to be not just mirrored. Was radiators layout the same as for 742 model (behind the cockpit, small (oil?) from the left and rather big one from the right)? And most difficult for me: construction of the rear wing "space frame" for the car which was used at Trois-Rivières - the rear wing was situated far behind and lower than usual. It looks like there was a usual "frame" carried a special one for this wing. So, how that usual "frame" was connected to the subframe (looks like the upper points were somewhere on the lateral bar where suspension pick up points and Hewland Mk8 were bolted on)? And what about that special second "frame" for that low wing? Can anybody help to find any literature or magazines with some reviews of that certain chassis? Would be great if they are at ebay or any other online-shop. PS The scale model is going to be rather simple, just a mock-up, not of (even) Minichamps quality (not saying about some more sophisticated examples), but I really want to build something that should resemble the actual car, not just an average image. PPS This computer model is still in progress, so pay no attention that BDA's carburetor trumpets are going right through the engine cover [IMG][/IMG] |

As for the radiators and wing support frame - they differ even inside 74- model range (as from pictures I've seen), not mentioning different years. |

The radiators vary from car to car and even from race to race. The rear wing mount also varied as the 1974 season went on, getting longer and longer and extending further an further back. For 1975 a limit on rear overhang applied - slightly longer than the new limit that applied in F2. Height of the rear wing would not have changed.
Gearbox would be an FT200 rather than Mk.8. Prominent on the back of '74 marches is the large bucket-type oil tank. Early in the season, the car was fitted with a nose rad - 73B-style. |
