shipping a car to london
Hi, im from the states. My brother is moving to Mildenhall AFB near london. If he brought a camaro or mustang, v8 models of course, do you think anyone would be interested in buying it?

There is a thriving American car scene in the UK so he'll be able to sell his car without much hassle. With the Dollar so weak against the Pound at the moment, he'll get a decent price for it too.

Welcome aboard!
Mildenhall isn't "that" close to London - about 95 miles all told. However, shipping in a car shouldn't be a problem and a great many of the forces personnel do just that, with the result you see a lot of American-spec vehicles with Cambridgeshire and Suffolk licence plates. Be sure to get everything right at first registration in the UK so any potential buyer down the line doesn't find himself trying to register a difficult car, and you'll give yourself an advantage. And yes, there are always buyers for good late-model American sports cars. The market is big enough for a couple of dozen specialist dealers in the country and at least one car magazine to advertise in. Best of luck! |

There are plenty of USAF 'employees' vehicles rattling around here still on the USA plates, so there isn't a rush to re-register the vehicle once it gets to the UK.
Indeed recently I was cut-up by a Minivan bearing Florida plates. |

What is it about Florida plates?
A few years ago I was on a San Francisco streetcar that had to throw the brakes, anchors and anything else it had (losing a good few passengers in the process!!  ) when a car pulled across and stopped while its garage door opened. As we came to a halt, the streetcar driver said, "Florida plates - I knew it. They're always Florida plates."And last summer driving around Delaware, Maryland and D.C., I had three near misses - two of which involved Florida plated SUVs! |

Thanks for the replies. what would you suppose is the most desirable vehicle not found in the UK? Ford Expedition, F-150, older and/or newer mustangs, ... Thanks for your help and suggestions!

The popular American vehicles are currently bling-bling Escalades and Navigators. Top end F150s such as the Lightning models are also to be seen, run of the mill pickups less so.
A Mustang or Camaro will always be popular, but other than that you'd be taking a gamble. Check out http://www.autotrader.co.uk for prices. |

Having worked/lived in Canada it doesn't look that big for an RV......
However the thing that I do love is when you see an RV like that and it's towing a vehicle behind it as well, usually a huge SUV!!!! |

thanks for that link to autotrader. i heard gas over there is not cheap. over here its around 1.76 a gallon. we americans love gas guzzlers. my moms ford(5.4 litre) gets about 12-13 mpg in city and my dad's gmc(chevy), has a 5.7 litre, gets about 15. i swear my neighbors cooper can fit in my father's car!
those fastbacks are really hard to find for a good price here. Thanks again for your suggestions! |
