Michigan International
Question...
What do they do in a case like Michigan's qualifying? It's not official yet, but it may be rained out. Ordinarily they'd line them up according to championship points, but in this case seven cars were able to post times. Just wondering... Got my cooler ready, and we're leaving first thing Sunday morning for another exciting day in the Irish Hills. I'm usually wrong, but I've got a funny feeling that Fernandez is going to win. Still, GO HELIO! |

Okay. So they're lining them up according to Saturday practice times. Wasn't so sure. Earlier in the season, (Milwaukee?) they lined them up according to points after a rained-out qualifying.
This gives us a TeamRahal front row. Brack then Papis. But third is going to be Takagi. Interesting. Then Tracy. DeFerran 11th, and Castroneves way back in 19th. Thought the Penske chassis would be quicker. Hope everybody gets through the first two turns unscathed, hate to see one of the Penske boys out on the first lap. Same for Franchitti, starting dead last. Max Wilson has been cleared by doctors to drive, but the team hasn't a car for him. That sucks. Again, the qualifying (or lack thereof) will make for an interesting start. But, 500 miles is 500 miles, and if they can get the first lap in clean it's anybody's game. So, if you're watching on TV tomorrow and see some drunk guy in the stands, it's likely me. |

Generally CART lines the field up according to practice times in the event of a qualifying rainout. Using Championship points is the exception rather than the rule. Last month in Milwaukee, much of Friday's practice and all of Saturday's was rained out as well and because of the small amount of track time the cars received, points were used. CART has been lucky not to have had many qualifying rainouts but of the more recent ones (Gateway in 98, Milwaukee in 96) practice times have set the grid.

But the scarry thing about the grid now is that Takagi is on the second row with Tracey.
