Anyone wanna guess at the over/under on wrecked or damaged cars? This is a street circuit and the weather forecast is less than excellent.

It's no more a "street circuit" than Montreal, so can we cut it out with the bashing crap?
Also, if they ran that long, right-hander at the end of the back stretch, without that extra curbing that slows guys down trying to make a better overtaking point, Belle Isle could be faster on average speed for the IMSA Prototype class than Laguna Seca. (So the course isn't abnormally tight or slow; just give the unwarranted BS a rest, alright?) |

Fair enough.
As far as parkland circuits go, I think Montreal and Melbourne are better. The closest, in a number of respects, that comes to mind, is probably the Adelaide circuit. Amusingly, both it and Detroit have a short and a long variant. |

It's a street track, so it'll be bumpy with little grip until they get rubber down. Problem is that there's relatively little track time for the IMSA cars, and any rain will wash a good deal of that rubber away. Also, like any other street/semi-permanent circuit (think Le Mans or Spa pre 2000 when the whole track became private property), the road is crowned in each lane. That means that water will pool in the "tram lines" (grooves where road cars normally travel).
That, and Detroit is a true street/semi-perm. track with little run off, so if you go off, you're probably going to run into something. Think back to the end of the race in 2014 I think it was when it rained the last lap or two. I think that this race will be a hairy one for some, especially if they get a lot of rain. That does make watching the race fun/interesting if you don't have a dog in the fight. |

I don;'t see any problem with having the drivers race ion a challenging circuit. The hacks will mess up, the talented drivers will adapt. I hate the resulting caution periods, but i don't mind knowing the drivers have to work to make it work.
So long as the main method of overtaking isn't the hipcheck, I am pretty good with watching the show wherever it goes. |

I'm actually slightly surprised at that, Matt. So, your least favorite is?

The Doran crew only consist of six people? At least I assume they're the "additional crew"

I guess Mazda only paid for a fair shot to win their home race, but wouldn't pony up to compete for a win at Detroit ... or figured they would get muscled aside by a DP anyway so why bother.

I watched the Mosport PWC race half an hour ago. Big heavy, powerful cars and light, lithe, lower-powered cars all competing---tremendously exciting because every driver had to figure how to use his/her car to beat a different driver and car at different points around the track. Huge variety of cars and performance potentials. Great fun.
Obviously they need to massively BoP that field. How can you have racing when a Lotus can beat a Mustang through a slow corner and a Mustang can catch back up on the straights? It just won't work---in IMSA. |

The prototype teams running P2 cars have always been hindered by a slow Am driver or reliability. Or Mazda stuffing it up at Laguna. |

Mazda was given better bop because it was off at Sebring. Then it did too good in Laguna Seca so they're pegging it back.

A late scratch for the #540 Black Swan Racing GTD Porsche 911 GT3R. Apparently Tim Pappas has conflicting business obligations.

Regarding the track itself, I've never been a huge fan but it's a neat setting in MoTown and challenging for the drivers, with close quarters and a couple decent passing zones. It's produced some decent finishes, too, so I've generally enjoyed the viewing.
And it's probably the nicest place in Detroit these days. |
