hiya,
size of tow car is something ive been looking into too. I'll let someone with towing experience answer this, but what i heard is that its ok to tow upto 80% of the tow cars weight. - can anyone verify this?? |

gona be racing in the 750 stock hatch
looks like a very popular championship with over 60 cars per race meet they normally have to run 2 races to fit them all in... so fastest quallys go in the first race and so on!! points down to 50th place cars are almost standard |

The vehicle handbook should list the towing weights...

I have docs about the much newer Peugeot 307, but it can be useful for reference.
Diesel 2.0 HDI 90CV, well above your car, is homologated to tow 1300kg Normal 1.4 75CV, a bit above your car, is homolog for 1000kg Your 1.9 diesel maybe is equiv to 1.2 or 1.3 normal engine, so your homologateg tow capacity is maybe 1000kg or 900kg or something aroung it. My dear old P205 weigthed around 850kg, your race prep car is lighter for sure, and you will know its weight with precission. Add the trailer and we surely have a very close legal situation. Conclusion: IMHO look the official homologated figures because it is not clearly below or above your case I hope this is useful somehow. If someone had the original user handbook for the 309... |

thanx for that info Schummy does sound like i might get away with the 306 diesel we don't have the car yet... just doing some homework b4 we buy... going by the caravan association... you shouldn't exceed 85% of the cars gross weight..... so i might have a prob, going by that.... the 205 is around the 800gk i don't know what the gross weight of a 306 is
i'll have to do some more searching:confused: |

That sounds about right, the Sports Six Club ran a piece in their mag with the same info, but that is assuming the trailer is braked, if not the wight should not be more than half the weight of the car. Personaly, I would keep well within the weight limit and don't forget the speed limits for towing (50mph on an A road, 65 on a motorway) Also, get a stablizer, they are well worth the cost!

It's also worth finding somewhere to practice reversing etc so you don't make a fool out of yourself in front of people who have been towing for years!!!

Don't forget to factor in the weight of a trailer. A small light trailer is around 300-400kg. I would also strongly recommend a rear wheel drive car. FWD is not suitable for heavy towing.

i think a 4WD is even better ... .. also to be sure about the max tow limit ... please tell the year of make ... of the car ... if is older than 1997
