oil catch tanks
All,
Just after some advice really with my oil catch tank on a 1988 formula ford van diemen. When I was testing earlier in the year my car was depositing small amounts of oil onto the track. On closer inspection later the oil was dripping out of the catch tank. The tank itself seems to be missing a hose from the bottom because at the moment there is just a pipe (which will leak onto the track unless it's connected somewhere ?) Also should this tank have a small breather vent hole in the top ?, it looks like it might have done in the past but looks like it's been welded ? I have taken the tank off and drained it but any detailed information on this tank appreciated especially if there should be a hose or pipe connected to the bottom of the tank and where this should go ? Cheers All Tiptop |

tiptop i beleve the catch tank should drain the oil back to the sump so check for holes/hoses not used in that area.the catch tank should also be able to vent to atmosphere ie have a hole in the top

The oil catch tank should be the last collective area for any liquid before it vents to the atmosphere. There should be an inlet at the top of the tank fed from the most upper part of your oil tank. There should be a sight gauge to see how much oil has collected. This may be a transparent pipe leading from the top to bottom. You should fit a breather too. Otherwise how will the excess oil get in? The min size for the tank is stated in your blue book.
