If this is true it's a great shame. Whilst Murray undeniably makes mistakes I've always found his enthusiasm adds a whole dimension to the experience of watching a Grand Prix, and to be completely honest with the way things get these days sometimes he's the only thing that keeps me awake. I suppose we have to be realistic though, it's best he retires before he really does have a heart attack!

Let the forecasting commence

So if Murray's out, who's in?

After 'Jobs for the boys' a while back, my money's on Hale and Pace

I am praying it is not Simon Taylor who relaces Murray!

I hope it is John Watson / James Allen or in an ideal world Clive James!

I may not always be Murray's greatest fan, but the coverage will not be the same without him.

And please...NOT SIMON TAYLOR!!!

Erm, lets think. We've already got 1 ex-driver in Martin Brundle, so we don't need another "expert". But we do need an alleged "enthusiast" with TV experience.

OH NO NOT NOEL EDMONDS......................

PS By the way, you will be missed Murray, all the best.

SL should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid

Sad day for motor sport, I cannot think of another sport commentator who has been in the front line for so long. Mistakes yes, but I'm sure that I would have made quite a few also had I been in the same position.

How about Jeremy Clarkson, TV vetern, motor mouth on a BIG scale and he would not loose sleep about upsetting anyone.

Simon

I feel I must put in a quick word about Simon Taylor.

Whatever else is said about him, he is a thoroughly decent chap. A great enthusiast, an intelligent journalist, and, lest it be forgotten, owner/driver of a particularly exquisite 1930s Bentley.

Can't commentate for toffee, though....

I for one, have always enjoyed Murray's commentry, and will miss his lively voice and endless supply of 'Murrayisims'.
Whoever replaces him has big shoes to fill.

Hmmmmmmmm, what's Damon Hill doing these days? (shudder)

Murray

Staying up of a night won't be the same next year. Despite the many mistakes the enthusiasm bought to the position has been appreciated over the last twenty years. Well done Murray.

Great. That means 2 anti schumi's on the panel. My vote is for James Allen, he seems relatively impartial.

As for Murray, he is irreplaceable. Commentators will come and go, but there will only be one Murray Walker. I just hope Brundle keeps his comments to a minimum next year. For the next 17 races all I want to hear is Murray's voice.

It has got to be James Allen

I firmly believe he is one hell of a commentator. And, although he may not be as good as Walker, he and Brundle would be a good combination.

Well done Murray on five decades or so of commentating. I don't look forward to the Chequered Flag waving in Japan next season. Sad

Valve Bounce has been held in scrutiny for further testing
Watched Murray on teh news tonight about his retirement. They showed one of his great interviws with Nigel.
Murray looks at Nigels face and says: "That's a huge lump on your head, let me see it." Nigel leans forward, and Murray pokes the lump on Nigel's forehead, then says "sorry' to an obviously hurt Nigel.
With those thick glasses, I am surprised Murray can see anything on the track. Yes, I will miss Murray

Apparently Murray will be slowly winding down throughout 2001, covering only 12 of the 17 races.

This will give ITV a chance to try out some of the hopefuls for the job.

I would say that following his impressive job at the French GP though that James Allen would be a hot favourite.

I was just thinking to those who filled in for Martin when he was at Le Mans the last couple of years.

Derek Warwick did a pretty awful you I thought, mainly failing due to the fact that he couldn't pronounce Fisichella - not normally a problem, but Fisi was running very strong in that race and I think lead it for a while.

Mark Blundell was the other stand in and I think he did a reasonable job. Given that Mark is currently without a 2001 ride he may be one of those who has a go at one of the 5 Murray doesn't do.

It is a shame, his voice and Murrayisms will be missed.

The question now is who could possibly fill his shoes. The obvious answer seems to be James Allen, but I have a preference for the Eurosport Cart announcer. (I forget his name, supposedly he is up for the job). He is very good (Much better than the usual ESPN guys), and almost as interesting as Murray.

Ben Edwards does CART on Eurosport. He has done F1 (for Eurosport) in the past, alongside John Watson when ITV didn't have the exclusive licence.
