Seems Governments are finally doing their maths properly and realising that all these economic benefit projections are basically unmeasurable...

Cochrane will no doubt slag off the Qld Government for their "lack of foresight" and their "ignoring the huge financial benefits" but good on the Queenslanders for having the cajoles to say "jam it Tony..."

Old argument but why should the taxpayers continually fund these street events that do no more than channel money into cafes, taxi drivers, restaurants, motels and the private contractors who are in bed with Tony?

If you are REALLY in the entertainment game Mr C, why don't you build your own track?????????????

the Red Bull Air Race

The WA Govt funded the Red Bull Air Race a few weeks back - good exposure internationally like the WRC - WA were the first to send Coch0 packing with a street race proposal back then. The winners have to have been the WASCC, the circuit at Wanneroo & motorsport fans out West.

However Mr Cochrane said the Townsville decision may now affect V8 Supercars involvement with the Indy race on the Gold Coast.

"But I can't elaborate at this point in time."

Quote:
Mr Cochrane said North Queensland would now be excluded for consideration by V8 Supercars for future events for at least five years.

"We will now be concentrating on bids from other cities around Australia and the world. They will now take a priority over North Queensland, and that is a real setback.

Looks they must have used the same accountant who counts the spectators at events for them.....

Big win for all the tracks that is

I must say, I can hear the VE$A office start to implode, with comments like "it will effect our involvement at events like Indy". Not going to win friends like that Tony.....

I dont think the issue is as simple as we are making it. It may not be an outright rejection of V8Supercar by the Queensland Government, but a localised issue that is more pressing to be satisfied.

The Townsville area was seriously flooded earlier this year, and what is not mentioned in the articles published about the 'rejection' is that there are said to be many people in the Innisfail area (located just north of Townsville) who have been complaining about the slow speed for repairs to their homes damaged in these floods.

Small things are still missing, like roof repair/replacement, walls, windows etc that are apparently currently jerryrigged with tarpaulins and ropes and other makeshift bandaids, as they were from a number of months ago after the storms.

The 'wet' season in North Queensland is also fast approaching and with these people said to still be waiting for roof repairs from some time ago, they would be right to be worried about further possible damage in coming months.

Perhaps the Queensland Government don't wish to be seen spending money on a motor race in North Queensland when the residents of the spectator catchment areas are still waiting for their homes to be repaired so they can actually live in them??

Presuming any of this actually happened

I'm not sure that is the main reason for the cancellation of the event though.

I think the answer more lies here

quote “The Queensland Government is proud to support the Lexmark Indy 300 in partnership with IMG and we have committed $11.2 million to this year’s event...

That was for last years event.
Why should they dip into the public purse again???

Get a grip Tony.

Or more accurately. Release your grip...

We've only just had one earlier this year. Beattie has a moderately huge majority.

I wonder also whether the imminent arrival of Rally Australia may have had some wondering well just how much are we going to spend on motorsport?

Not sure the question is the money spent on motorsport , more the target market of the spending.

Champ Cars & WRC suggest the market is international versus the largely local appeal of V8s.
