BAT reportedly considering selling BAR
* Reports in The Sunday Telegraph stated that British American Tobacco has appointed Goldman Sachs to look into the possibility of selling BAR. It furthermore stated that the selling off might be for all or just part of the BAR team. In 2001, BAR has accumulated three championship points and is fifth in the constructors' championship. As I said before you have to win Jax start looking for a job!!!!! GP19 |

During the race, I'm pretty sure that Murray said that next year Benneton will be Renault, and BAR will be Honda.

Well if this is true I hope that Honda steps in and buys the team outright. Then they can stop messing around with Jordan and concentrate on producing their own car and engine. Honda has to step up and get serious if they want to contend with the likes of Williams, McLaren and Ferrari.

I would imagine that this is especially likely since Toyota, their main Japanese competitors, have their own team and engine. Honda will want to do the same for the 2002 season.

Assuming Honda were to buy out BAT, there would be personnel changes, Honda would bring in more of their own people and generally create turmoil, sort of like when Ford bought Stewart and turned it into Jaguar.
It would set the team back a couple of seasons at least. I think they should drop BAR and concentrate on Jordan in a close Partnership. If they attempt to compete directly with Toyota who are MUCH larger, they will burn money faster than they need to. |

Well, considering the state of the BAR chassis, I suppose EJ is not going to want any Honda chassis engineers on board as part of any deal.
One opinion I see a lot here is that one of BAR's biggest problems is they are poorly run, with a lot of internal rivalries. Can Honda accomplish their goals if they are only Jordan's engine supplier? How much control would Eddie have to relinquish in a bigger deal? At least by buying BAR, they have an infrastructure (how 'bout that one!) in place already, so the cost wouldn't be like Toyota's. They already have Suzuka to test on. Lots of possibilities here, but I really think if JV's luck were a little better so far, and Olivier's too, this issue wouldn't be snowballing like it is. But thats F1, where anything can happen, and it usually does. (Thks Murray!) |

BAT is complitelly right selling this team.
It was a weak deal from the very start. 2005 will be the end of tobacco sponsorship in F1, so what a hell they need their own team. The only reason which might justify this investment would be wins (where they are?). It was naive to presume that it's possible to raise the team from the end of the grid to WCC for several years. For this you need the most experied and talented staff, not Creig Pollog. Reinards is experied in other series but had weak links with F1. For their aids they need at least Newey as constructor and Ross as team manager. The way EJ raising his team is more relilable (slowand attantive, without aloud proclamations). It would be pity, if Honda left him in order to invest all of its efforts in today BAR. But it's going to be this way, Honda had already declared its intensions to increase their part in the team management. One more result: JV will had to work harder for other owner. |

If Honda were to buy-out BAR they already have a bit of a head start since they were supposed to come into F1 in their own right a year or two back right?
The problem is that BAT, like Jaguar, expect results too quickly. Jordan, Sauber, Minardi, Arrows - all of them prove that results don't come quickly in F1 - they have to be worked for. |
