I'd like to see Alex back at the Champ Cars... as a spokesman or a co-owner etc... I know he is confirmed for one more year driving the BMW touring car and I don't know his future plans but I think he should step up with his reputation...!?

actually I showed the interview to my other half (who doesnt really follow motorsport and has never heard of Alex)
She was amazed (firstly by the tricks he did with his legs ) but at his determination and attitude in general towards life. she also stated that the book should be a fantastic read and now understands why when (and if) we decide to have another child im dead adament that it will be named Alex (boy or girl) Well done AZ you have won another fan |

I don't think you'll see Alessandro back in Champ Cars as a team owner.
With his son approaching school age, Zanardi doesn't want to be spending all his time travelling between Monaco and the USA. |

The most courteous paddock personality I've ever met, he became my favourite active driver long before he ever won his first race.
Since then, he's become my favourite all-time driver. (Sorry, Rick!) |

For Cam...
I'm walking the paddock in Detroit, very early on the Friday morning in 1996. Got my program in one hand, an autograph pen in the other. I'm pretty-much the only person in the entire compound, save for a few mechanics running around with coffees. But then my "hero", Rocket Rick, walks into the paddock area. I approach him and introduce myself, explaining that "I've been his fan since I was a little kid" - to which he thanks me for making him feel old. We had a little laugh and it turned in to quite a long conversation, we spoke about all four of his Indy victories, and about his final race at Michigan. Even if I met nobody else all weekend, I left a very happy camper. Soon thereafter, I notice another driver sitting on a bicycle. Might as well score his autograph, what the heck. But as I walk over to him, I realize that I have absolutely no idea who this guy is. Feeling stupid, and trying to hide my ignorance, I simply handed Alessandro (as he was known that year) my entire program and asked him to sign it for me. Pretty coy on my part I figure, he's got to leaf through the book to find his picture, and then I'll know who he is! But as he turns the pages, he stops frequently and sheds kind words about several of his fellow drivers. I particularly remember that he spoke highly of Greg Moore, but there were many others. He told a few funny stories and seemed to go on forever. I was actually taken aback by how personable and friendly this "Zanardi-guy" was. Finally he found his picture, signed it, returned the book but kept on talking. Finally he wished me a fun weekend, I wished him a safe one, and I walked away with a new favourite "active" driver. Little did I know what fantastic heights this driver would achieve, at the time he was a winless rookie. That was a great weekend for me, now that I look back upon it. Not only did I meet Rick and Alex, but also Emmo and Jackie Stewart. I met Alex again in 1998, but the paddock was a busy place that time and no conversation ensued. Just a quick autograph amongst the masses. One thing about Alex... EVERY time I hear the word "nevertheless" I instantly think of him. How many times did he ever use that word in a post-race interview? |
