Maybe I'm being stupid...
I've never claimed much in the way of technical expertise, so this may be a stupid question. I was browsing Mulsanne's Corner and saw a thing on the new Mugen V8 which Kondo are running at Le Mans. Now, the Mugen is only a four-litre unit, but they're claiming nearly 600 bhp. My question is: why not turbocharge it? It's under the limit for a turbocharged LMP900 unit, and would presumably be yet more powerful.
May be a stupid question, but seemed odd to me. (Same thing goes for the Judd GV4.) |

The block casting may not have the necessary support to use extra boost. It takes a thicker main bearing web and wider rod journals to run an engine with boost. The engine may have to be redesigned to accomodate this.

bigger engine=smaller restrictors
But if you are already running 600bhp, then why make it bigger. Remember the engine is also much more compact when it is smaller. You could argue why not make the Audi 0.4l bigger? |

Well, they can't make the Audi engine bigger; a four-litre twin-turbo is as big as the rules allow. But the Mugen is normally-aspirated.

I believe the Audi is a 3.8 liter V8 with twin turbos.

Ah, sorry, I thought they'd used the four-litre unit in the 2002 R8. I stand corrected.

Pirenzo's got it right, the Audi engine is 3.6 L.
