Who here has an interest in classic road rallies?
In Australia we have two such events on a major level, Classic Adelaide and Targa Tasmania. Both events are held on godd tarmac roads, closed to the public for special stages, over 4 or 5 days. The modifications to the cars are somewhat restricted and there are different categories for cars of different eras. This year's Classic Adelaide was won outright by a Datsun 510SSS (Yay!!!!!) narrowly from a Mk I Escort BDA. Jack Brabham also took part in an Aston Martin DB4 and Win Percy drove a Cobra 429 Replica. V8 Supercar privateer Peter Gazzard drove an XW Falcon GT. |

Now these are the kind of rallies I can get into ..as long as they stay on the tarmac I can see myself having a crack at them..one of my ambitions in life is to compete in the targa Tasmania with my wife as my co driver..but not a competitive level of course...thats what i like about some of these events ..sure there are pro's that bring in the best cars and best drivers and take off at break neck speed..but there is also your everyday competitor who is out there to go fast but not to fast and just basically enjoy the ride.
ive even seen footage of people in targa stopping along the roadside for a picnic lunch..now thats my idea of a great rally..just get out there have a ball but mainly enjoy the view and have a little bit of a go but dont go out there to try and be a Colin mcRea or carlos sainz. |

Marcus, a friend of mine does Targa Tasmania every year in his LJ XU-1, with his wife as navigator. They have a great time and really enjoy the event together. So far they haven't had an off or a major breakage and he said it costs a little under $15,000 each time. I'd love to have a go myself, but that's too rich for my blood.

I can see myself doing the odd Classic Rally in my trusty old Mk1 Escort, but I think I might have to limit myself to the UK!! The Mk1/Mk2 Escort (I know, hardly 'classic'!) is still one of the cars to beat on UK club rallies. Along with the Mini of course... |

The Mk I & II Eskies are classics in my book and the Mini is a classic in anyone's book. Escorts have always done very well in Rally in Australia, but they are not so popular now at club level because Japanese cars are so much cheaper to buy and run. Having said that the Lotus and BDA powered cars are very popular with wealthy amateurs.
Two of my good friends race Mk 2 Escorts in the Improved Production Touring Class. One has a 2 litre Pinto block with Cosworth 16v DOHC head ala Sierra, the other is fitted with the DOHC 16v engine commonly found in a Mazda MX5!!! |
