Eyesight for National B licence
OK...major spanner in the works here (possibly!)
The MSA have just called to say that my eyesight is not to the required level of 6/6 and that I need to have a letter from my doctor or optician to say that it is! My doctor put it down as 3/4 which apparently equates to 6/9 which is worse than 6/6 apparently but only just! I'm going to make use of the free eyesight test I get from work to get the letter from an optician, but if I can't, am I stuck? I'm sure I've seen racers wearing glasses in their helmets!! |

forgot to say that my doctor also made a point of saying that my eyesight was fine!!

Provided you have at least one eye in more or less working order you can get a B license - two is better - the worse the eyesight the more paperwork is needed - thats all - chill....

Any need for glasses is not an issue (eg Villeneuve & Ralf lenses)

Why is it always the clubmen that have to go through all these tests.
It is quite clear the higher level drivers (BTCC etc) do not have to attain such a high standard of eyesight hence the driver's need for "braille" driving tactics. |

FEB 6TH AT Sillystone
Am sign on. Instruction on GP circuit in School 111s Elises Fun autotest in Caterham with race tyres on front and hard as coal, Woosung Dark Horse (good for 100,000 miles!) on the rear! Then GP circuit in your own car. All for £300 ish The track days later in the year start at £390 each as the circuit costs something like 27k to hire these days there are few companies willing to take the risk. No the ARDS is a 'special day aimed at people with little track experience. I am also using it for a few new TVR racers in the Series which I run.
There are cheaper days but time and equipment costs I'm afraid! The costs are all Silverstones not mine. I am a fan of these days though as I have run one every year since 2000. For new racers they are a good tap of ionformation and ideas from some of the UKs best minds on technique, approach etc. Also it gives the driver 'bum in seat' time before the sometimes nerve wracking bit of the driving assessment. I am proud to say I have a 100% record on passes over the previous years which is testimony to the day I think. PLUS the guys had fun! It will consist of: 1. Significant classroom briefing about race technique etc. 2. Standard ARDS written exam 3. Instruction in car at end of which the practical assessment will be made (this is usually, you drive car Intructor assesses from 3rd lap) 4. Timed autotest to practise throttle control in a specially prepared Caterham with rock hard rear tyres and sft grippy ones on the front!. 5. Final presentations to all concerned. Last price I had was £275 plus Hope this helps. Best regards Steve L |
