Alternators...

Hi,

Im racing in the Quiafe Intermarque Series this year.

The regs have stated that we must run an alternator. The problem I have is that my car is a spaceframe and was never designed to have an alternator fitted, therefore space is very limited on both sides of the engine block. I am having trouble finding a suitable place for it as Im running a dry sump pump on one side and very limited space on the other side.

I am basically asking if anyone knows of a very small alternator (I mean tiny) from a road car that I could squeeze in somwhere? The standard Vauxhall one is far too big.

Thanks for any help

Look at the alternators used on Japanese based mini-vans that florists like - Suzuki, Daihatsu, Bedford Rascal etc.,

Does it need to be engine driven? Could it be attached to a gearbox hub or driven from a driveshaft?

One off of a mini tractor will do the job,I've got one that you can borrow for sizing,I'm not far away from you or failing that Graham Bahr runs his off of the propshaft on his race car. MSA state that you have to run a charging system btw

We used to run an altenator off the driveshaft in the Quaife GT car, is this not allowed in the regs?

It will be easier to squeeze one in beside the engine to be honest.

You could always mount it on the spaceframe

If space is really that tight, why not run a small solar panel charger direct to the battery? Joking apart, it is a charging system! Or do the regs specify an altenator?
